As I am trying to start some korfball activities in South West France, I am hoping that some former korfball players (English, Dutch, Belgian, French, Spanish) have moved to this region (Toulouse, Carcassonne, Bordeaux). The nearest korfball cities are Saint Etienne and Barcelona (both about 5 hours drive). If anyone knows someone who has moved to this region please let me know at monkysimonathotmaildotcom.

Le premier tournoi international de Korfball au Maroc, à Nador..

La fondation de Korfball Maroc / Pays-Bas organise, en collaboration avec le Club Marocain De Korfball à Nador, le premier tournoi international de Korfball au Maroc du 3 au 10 janvier 2012. La Fondation Maroc Nederland de Korfball (KMN) essaie de promouvoir le Korfball au Maroc avec l’aide des Pays-Bas, où l’histoire du Korfball est riche (Les Pays-Bas ont été 8 fois champions du monde de Korfball).

Tout a commencé au début de 2010 avec le projet « il est temps pour le Korfball » à l’initiative d’El Mamoun Loukili, qui déjà en 2007 avait effectué une présentation de Korfball dans la localité de Driouch. Au début de 2010, des visites à Driouch, Nador et Oujda ont connu un succès inattendu. Le directeur régional de l’éducation à Oujda a été très coopératif et a permis d’introduire le Korfball dans deux écoles secondaires.

En Juin 2011, la Fondation de Korfball Maroc / Pays-Bas a signé une convention de partenariat avec l’Académie Régionale de l’Éducation et de la Formation de la Région de l’Oriental. La fondation a été établie en fin 2010 suite aux contacts entre les associations néerlandaises de Korfball et des écoles de la Région de l’Oriental. Deux clubs de Korfball ont également été créés à Oujda et Nador avec l’assistance de clubs hollandais et d’athlètes marocains qui offrent un accompagnement visant la professionnalisation de cette discipline au Maroc. Le sport présente un aspect spécial dans le sens que les équipes de Korfball se composent obligatoirement d’hommes et de femmes. La Fondation s’est déjà fixée comme objectif de soutenir la création d’une Fédération Royale Marocaine de Korfball, et de permettre son adhésion à la Fédération Internationale de Korfball en 2013.

Language assistance for Android Shot Clock App

"I've written an Shot Clock app for Android. I'm going to release if for free and I would hope that it would be useful for training where you didn't have a proper shot clock available. As the players won't be able to see the screen it has the option to play warning sounds (or speak a countdown) before it plays the hooter. (It also has a setting for basketball to make it a bit more useful.)
I need some help localising the app to foreign countries, especially NL. Below is a list of the words that I use in the app along with the babelfish Dutch translation. I know from experience that the babelfish translation is not great (and some of the expressions are too long.)
I'd be grateful if any of our native Dutch speakers could provide some better translations. If there are any other korfballers from other countries who fancy translating into their language then that would be great as well.

The famous Belgium korfball journalist Mr.Ludo Wils wrote the following story on the Belgian korfball site:

Record number of goals
Minerva striker Kevin Cramm scored 14 golas in the match against KC. Putse. The question if this is a record immediately arises.
But no, that is only equaling a record.
... When Guy Junes was an active player in KC. Sikopi, he scored 13 goals against KC. Voorwaarts. That was a record. A few weeks later Wim Verhoeven, a player of KC. Scaldis improved that record in a match against KC. Espero. Wim scored 14 times.
But now we need to make one remark.
Wim Verhoeven scored 14 goals in a 2x25 min playing time match. That is because in that time, the "top matches" on a Sunday afternoon, in the Arena Deurnese, were this long. Today we play 2x30 min.
But the the fourteen goals from Kevin Cramm are a great performance.

I would like to make a Dutch addition to the interesting story of Mr.Ludo Wils. Since the start of the Dutch Korfball League the records and statistics are selected and kept by Mr.Joost Spierings. I draw from this sources the Dutch records:
* The highest number of goals scored in a match: 62 scores (Koog Zaandijk - Dalto and also Blauw Wit - Dalto)
* The highest number of goals scored by one man in one match is held by Jos Roseboom: 16. The women's record stands at 12 by Mady Tims.
* The Korfball League 2011-2012: Player Mick Snel scored 12 goals and female player Ilona van den Berg scored 8 times in one match.

I agree with Nicky. The reasons why people stay is as important if not more important than the reasons why they leave. Sport England did a survey measuring 'satisfaction with the quality of the sporting experience' across 46 sports every year (for the last 3 years).

They identify 10 different sporting 'domains' or areas of satisfaction:

Social/belonging
Facilities and playing environment
Logistics/organisation
People and staff
Diversion/release
Exertion and fitness
Officiating
Coaching

Each sport is different of course but I'd like to highlight some of the findings from basketball and netball.

Within these reports they identify 'Drivers of satisfaction' for different types of participants. The section of most interest to us I believe is 'The key domains and questions to focus on to increase overall satisfaction among club members'.

Looking through these results I would say that the 5 areas identified by combining these lists are representative of most importance factors contributing to korfballer satisfaction:

Feeling better about myself having taken part in my sport

Exertion and fitness
The sport's contribution to my overall health
The opportunities to improve my fitness levels by participating in my sport
The opportunities to get the levels of physical exertion from my sport that were right for me

Social aspects
The opportunities for me to socialise through my sport
That I could participate in my sport without feeling embarrassed or awkward
The opportunities the sport gave me to feel part of a wider group or team

People and staff
How welcome I was made to feel by the people who organise or run my sport
The attitude towards families and young people in my sport
The competence of the paid professional staff I came into contact with in my sport

Performance
The opportunities I had to compete at a level that suited my abilities
The opportunities I had to learn, practice and develop skills in my sport
The opportunities I had to progress and improve in my sport

The report also includes some quotes which may sound familiar to all of us:
'The one thing that is a problem with netball in my opinion is the quality of umpiring and that it doesn't always seem to be consistent which sometimes spoils the game (Netball club member)'

'Netball has brought my family together. My daughter plays, I now play and my husband umpires!! The only thing I would like to see is the improvement in the conditions of the courts. (Netball club member)'

'The improvements to facilities is great but has also made playing the sport much more expensive as clubs are charged high rates for facilities (Basketball club member)'

'Pay as you go session with coaching and mini tournaments or joining in with the local league would be FAB (Basketball club member)'

'One of the main problems is, that we don't have venues. Our 'home' venue is more than an hours drive away, we train in a hall that is too small, it's expensive for everyone and there is hardly any teams to compete against, but a very wide range of abilities within teams (Handball club member)'

'Youth development helps generate more teams/competition, but we need somewhere to play the sport, too.... decent sized sports halls. It is very frustrating to play in a non-heated sports hall in the middle of winter, or only having 2-3 venues available in the whole of south England that have the right size, some of which are very expensive (Handball club member)'

Korfball does not stand alone in the problems it is undergoing! It would be great to get involed in this survey to allow us to benchmark ourselves against other sports.

IKF Published their New Ranking
Following the IKF World Championship recently completed in Shaoxing (CHN) the IKF hereby publishes a new Ranking with effect from 6 December 2011.

The top three places in the ranking are unchanged but there are several changes in the next seven places compared to one year ago. England, following its 5th place in the IKF WC and 3rd place in the IKF u21 EC moves up from 5th to 4th; Catalonia moves from 8th to 5th after finishing 4th at the IKF WC; the Czech Republic slips to 6th after finishing 8th in the IKF WC; Russia slips from 6th to 9th following its 6th place at the IKF WC and withdrawal from the IKF u21 EC and China moves into the top 10 at the expense of Australia, following its match against Australia in the final round of the IKF WC.

The Ranking is made up of a country’s placing at one of the IKF Ranking events – IKF WC, IKF u23 WC, IKF Continental Championship, IKF u23/u21 Continental Championship and the World Games, together with some basic points rewarding length of membership and participation in IKF and IKF recognised events. Each ranking event is given a weighting according to its relative importance and points are written down each year over the four year cycle of the ranking period until replaced by the new ranking event.

I recently came across an interesting report from the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation.
The report is titled 'Investigating reasons for sports drop-out
amongst women and girls' and it specifically looks at the reasons why girls aged between 16 & 18 drop out of organised sport. Whilst I would hope that the report would be a worthwhile read to all of those involved in junior development, I believe that the findings will be of general interest to all korfball organisers seeking to understand how to retain players.

The report looks at participation in 8 different sports and outlines the following reasons why young women who drop out of sport:

Time for something new
Competing social interests
Conflicts with other commitments (time)
Lack of players
Lack of support from schools
Poor coaching/teaching
Transition from junior to senior leagues
Not enough opportunity to play in matches

These are not in order and there are differences between the sports analysed. The report explores each of these reasons and make some suggestions to counter their effect. (I'm sure that many of the suggested interventions have been tried by clubs with different levels of success.)
I think most of these issues apply to senior (and male) korfballers. I would probably add the following reason why adult korfballers stop playing:

Matches/facilities not of high enough quality
Failure to recover completely from injury

There are no easy solutions for any of these reasons for drop-out however I would hope that a better understanding of the problems will help us find better solutions. Does anyone know of any other helpful studies about drop-out from sport or about the reason why people stay in sport?

Functions; roles and Action Profiles

I have discussed the functions in korfball before. In the attack (for instance): to shoot, to assist, to rebound, to pass. In defense (for instance): to defence 1-1, to hunt (press), to squeeze and to intercept. Special for (top)korfball is that these functions should be performed by all players of a team.
But there is indeed distinction. This is because the roles of the players are qualitatively different. One player can for instance be a better shooter than another other player. Moreover, roles are performed usually at specific positions of the attackers and defenders. Although it can be very surprising if there is a role that is executed in an unexpected position. (A 'false' Wolf)

Roles rotate in topkorfbal and therefore the interaction will be surprised.
We know the following roles:
- Attack: Tiger, Panther, Wolf and Bear;
- Defense: Guard, Hunter, Center and Guerrilla
The profiles of the roles are called: action profiles.

Vanaf heden is het boek "Eenvoudige Korfbalvormen" weer te verkrijgen. Het is alweer de zesde druk van een reeks die de trainer op pad kan helpen bij het uitoefenen van zijn/haar vak. Auteur Ben Crum is er weer in geslaagd een reeks van nieuwe helden op te nemen. Jonge korfballers die actief zijn op het hoogste niveau van het korfbal en de smaakmakers van de toekomst zijn. The coming weeks I will be out to do some commentary for the IKF from the World Championships. I'm not really sure, but the last I heard there will be no live streaming. The local organizing committee are supposed to have 3 cameras at each venue to record matches and I believe that these will be posted to the IKF's youtube channel here: http://www.youtube.com/user/ikfchannel

This is a special channel that gives us the facility to show full length games in high quality.

The Dutch are bringing a dedicated camera person with them who I assume will be doing features on the Dutch team. This and other material will probably be posted to the KNKV run site: http://www.korfbaltv.nl This is a decent site, with excellent quality streaming but it is let down by a terrible menu structure.

I really don't know what has happened to www.korfball.tv. (Korfball TV was always an IKF initiative and fully in their control). It is a crying shame that it has been neglected after all of the work that was done to get it going.

Ben Crum • Helaas kan ik niet aanwezig zijn doordat ik nog last heb van naweeen van een operatie. Hier dan wel wat stellingen:

* KNKV is ontwikkeld tot een voorschrijvend orgaan en daardoor is er veel afstand ontstaan tot haar leden en dus is het knkv te weinig service gericht voor haar leden de verenigingen. In de verenigingen moet de korfbalontwikkeling gebeuren!
* KNKV benoemt de competitie tot kernactiviteit maar competitie is slechts een vorm waardoor mensen aan korfbal doen. Beter is het als het KNKV zich bezint op het probleem hoe mensen aan korfbal willen doen. Dan leidt dat wellicht tot meer disciplines, andere aanbiedingsvormen (dus niet alleen competitie) en andere leden (scholen en bedrijven). Het is niet nodig om te discussieren over veldkorfbal. Er is juist plaats voor meer disciplines.
* verenigingen moeten zich ontwikkelen van gesloten bolwerken tot open bolwerken. Bolwerken die van binnen sterk zijn( misschien professionaliseren) en naar buiten open zijn: openstelling van accommodatie, clubhuizen elke dag (ook zondag) voor buurt, dorp en stad.
* verenigingen, zoals Deetos maar ook PKC zijn voorbeelden van “ good practices” in bepaalde opzichten (niet in alles). Zij dienen als voorbeeld gesteld te worden. Het KNKV kan hiermee beleid ontwikkelen. Het knkv kan beginnen met het uitreiken van jaarprijzen aan voorbeeld verenigingen. Dus ook prijzen voor verenigingen met het beste schoolsportbeleid, bedrijfskorfbalbeleid.
* Clubhuizen zijn ontmoetingsruimten en geen cafe’s waar zoveel mogelijk bier wordt getapt. Als ouder moet je daar zonder enige moeite 2 uur kunnen wachten op je kinderen: eten, wifi gebruik, leestafel, gemakkelijke stoelen, loungen. Kijk naar de clubhuizen van golfclubs.
* Korfballers houden niet allemaal op dezelfde manier van het spel. Differentieer meer, zeker als het om toekomstig beleid gaat. Bespreek in ledenvergaderingen niet korfbal in het algemeen maar differentieer korfbalbeleid naar de beleving en de behoeften van de verschillen.Differentieer ook in de contributies: betaal voor wat je gebruikt.
* Bij het bouwen van sporthallen is het noodzakelijk om rekening te houden met de verschillende beleving en dus de behoeften van de korfballers. Een hal moet niet alleen een trainingsruimte zijn. (Veel verenigingen hebben bij het bouwen van een eigen hal te klein gedacht) Ook de buurt, het dorp moet bij de opzet van de hal betrokken worden. De korfbalvereniging neemt de functie over van de kerk de school de politieke partij. De vereniging als een open bolwerk.
* Verenigingen zijn open naar hun directe omgeving maar ook naar het buitenland om daar te werken aan korfbalontwikkeling, meer dan alleen spelpeil!
* Grote verenigingen steunen kleine verenigingen in hun directe omgeving
* IKF dient zich ook rekenschap te geven dat er meer mogelijk is dan zaalkorfbal en beachkorfbal.
* IKF moet een betere administratie gaan houden over het aantal korfballers in de landen in de wereld zodat het knkv niet 90% van de lasten op haar schouders moet nemen. De registratie is weliswaar moeilijk omdat niet in ieder land een club structuur bestaat. Maar misschien kan de IKF leren van de Internationale Hockey Federatie.
11.Het IKF moet in de eerste plaats nadenken over het probleem: Korfbal Olympische programmasport; Korfbal als publiekssport en Mediasport. Een bal die de kleuren van de producent moet dragen toont aan dat het IKF zich niet trots gedraagt. Een geel blauwe bal werkt niet mee aan de verkoop van de sport als publiekssport. Ledpalen led belijning zijn wel zaken die korfbal in de publiciteit brengen. Spelregel verandering: hele spelers lijnen heen en weer wisselen zoals bij ijshockey. Het IKF kent de geschiedenis niet van haar sport. Anders was verdedigd schieten als verbod al lang afgeschaft

Korfball TV in Belgium is a fact
KorfbalTV, a collaboration between ALL topkorfballeague clubs of Belgium and EyeVision will start this season. The contract between the KBKB and EyeVision has been signed. This means that every weekend, during the competition of the Topkorfballeague, two matches appear on KorfbalTV
In addition, of course, the semi-finals and finals are programmed.

The KBKB has also committed to a number of other events (such as Night of the Laureates, and Cup Final (youth) field finals) to cover.

England gives an example: Korfball Fun

The Balham astro korf tournament finished on Tuesday 23rd August after 5 weeks of games. The winners were Ernst & Young, with Mitcham 1 runners up.

By all accounts the tournament was a success and achieved its main goal - which was to give London clubs a short, easy to get to competition for new recruits to play in. The following sets out the lessons learned.

Recreational Competitions
People enjoyed playing competitive korfball with mixed ability teams. Balham astro korf isn't going to replace the national league or the london league, but it is a good complement to it. There were no rules on eligibility and players subbed in for other clubs if they were short. Clubs played in the spirit of the competition and generally used other teams beginners where available; experienced players used their experience to help beginners.

Short Competition
Having a very short competition (5 weeks) was important. It's much easier to get new players to sign up to a short competition that has a relatively small cost. Having played in the Balham Astro League those new players will, I think, be more likely to join a club for a year and play in the local league.

Referees
We had 4 unqualified referees officiating at matches with experienced referees giving feedback. The referees didn't get qualified, but the experience they got will make it easier for them to get qualified in the future. Having all the matches in the same venue made it straightforward to allocate referees and referee assessors.

Sponsorship
We had about 100 people playing every week and we went to the pub after the games. Having that many people descend on a pub makes a big difference, the manager quickly identified our buying power and offered us a korfball specific discount.

Next Year
Having demonstrated the concept of the Balham astro league it should definitely go ahead next year. This tournament was organised by the LKA, but next year's should be organised by the participating clubs. On reflection, the astro pitch in Balham could accommodate two smaller pitches which would allow matches to be twice as long. I also think that there is demand for a different kind of tournament (a magic hat tournament - where teams are picked on the day out of hat) earlier on in the summer, perhaps buidling up to the companies tournament.

This morning, I am pleased to see a news update concerning the clinics in Africa and Europe in 2012, the first round. However, IKF WC, the most important IKF event in 2011, is approaching.
May I propose to always keep the link to the brief information of WC like schedule, address of sport halls, contact person for spectators etc, on an obvious area of front page of IKF website. By this way, we may promote our IKF WC with better efficiency and friendly to our korfball fans.
Currently, if some more articles are published, the IKF logo will be hidden on page 2 very soon. If a korfball friend wants to know the match schedule now, he/she needs patience to find it on the bottom of page 5.

De combinatie van een maatschappelijke en een sportieve loopbaan is niet onbekend bij Brandsma. De Edese, die de World Games, een Europese en een wereldtitel op haar palmares heeft staan, is altijd maatschappelijk actief geweest tijdens haar succesvolle sportcarrière. “Van het korfbal kun je niet rondkomen, dus acht jaar
geleden heb ik gesolliciteerd bij het bedrijf waar ik nu nog werk. Ze zijn altijd goed voor me geweest. Als ik een paar dagen niet aanwezig kon zijn door een internationale wedstrijd of een trainingskamp, dan deden ze daar niet moeilijk over. Ik behield gewoon mijn vrije dagen, zodat ik ook na het seizoen op vakantie kon. sportieve prestaties en die probeer je elke dag weer te verbeteren. Daarom is het goed dat sporters na hun loopbaan terecht kunnen bij NOC*NSF voor verschillende vormen van begeleiding”, aldus Brandsma.

The Korfball Community Wants You

The word “korf” means “basket” in Dutch, and korfball was created in Holland, so many people refer to it as “Dutch basketball.” But the group of enthusiasts gathered for a tournament at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. will gladly provide a long list of the differences between korfball and American basketball.

I think of basketball with some European or soccer-type rules.
A great way to start is to think of it as a cross between ultimate Frisbee and basketball.
It’s co-ed and you move the ball by passing, so it’s a lot of cooperation.
You’re trying to get the ball into this hoop, the korf, taller than a basketball hoop with no backboard, so a little added challenge to it.

Why there’s no backboard? Who knows? That’s just what they had.
When you’ve got the ball you can’t move. You can pivot.
It’s one point per basket, regardless of where it’s shot from.

Two weeks ago, Hamilton College’s korfball organization, Hamilkorf, hosted its second annual tournament. Louis Boguchwal, a junior at Hamilton, is the founder. Originally from Pound Ridge, N.Y., Boguchwal spent his first year of college in St. Andrews, Scotland and tried korfball on a whim.

“I’d never heard of it and my goal on my year abroad was just do everything I can,” Boguchwal said. “Get into something cultural I’d never heard of. This really fit the bill, so I joined and it was a great group of people and it was just this interesting sport that anyone can play.”

When Boguchwal decided to transfer to Hamilton for his sophomore year, he wasn’t ready to give up his new hobby.

“I thought, ‘You know there’s one thing, I don’t want to leave behind. And that’d be korfball,’” Boguchwal said. “So I said, ‘I’m going to do whatever it takes to get this going in the U.S. or get it going at Hamilton. At the very least, give it a shot.’”

Boguchwal held an information session and before long, Hamilkorf was holding two practice sessions a week. These days, the korfball pitch is often set up on a well-worn basketball court in an old campus gym. Korfball hoops are 3.5 meters, or about 11-and-a-half feet, high. Older hoops feature a wicker cylinder, like a large laundry basket with the bottom cut out. The cylinders on modern hoops are bright yellow plastic.

At the gym, students warmed up, shooting traditional black and white korfballs, which look exactly like soccer balls, and newer versions, which are gold and blue.

The morning of the tournament opened with an instructional session led by Steve Barker. Today, Barker lives in Los Angeles, but he learned the game in the 1970s as a teenager growing up in England. He went on to play for Great Britain’s national team and has coached at just about every level. He demonstrated the way to follow through on a korfball shot, which is a sort of two-handed set shot.

“Make sure that you’re expressing the shot fully,” Barker called out, putting his arms all the way up, wrists pointing down. “Really extend the fingers into the shot. You’re taking all that power from the body and expressing it in the hands!”

There are 16 players on the korfball court at a time, four women and four men per team. Barker says the game’s structure keeps everyone involved and prevents people from becoming offensive or defensive specialists.

“The court is split into two halves. So, four [members] of the team, two men and two women [on one end], four at the other end,” Barker explained. “One would be defense, one would be attack. Now after two goals they swap over.”

Carl Yerger traveled to New York from North Carolina where he’s a math professor at Davidson College. Yerger learned the game in England while studying at Cambridge. He says because there’s no dribbling and players cannot shoot when they’re closely guarded, korfball hasn’t followed basketball’s evolutionary path.

“Height is less of an advantage in korfball and it’s more about speed and quickness and strategy, and the fact that it’s really hard for one person to take over a game,” Yerger, the United States Korfball Federation board member, said. “You can’t just give the ball to the LeBron of korfball or the Kobe of korfball because they can only take two steps with the ball. It’s not like they juke through their defenders, turn around twice and then dunk it. It just doesn’t work in korfball.”

Karla Wolters is a retired kinesiology professor who taught a korfball course that sparked a brief craze a few years ago at Hope College in Holland, Mich. She says it caught on quickly with her students.

“I have found that they love it being a co-ed game,” Wolters said. “They can play with their boyfriend or their girlfriend, play at the same time. You don’t have to cheer from the sidelines, you can play together. It’s something that they really probably haven’t done since elementary school, play a sport together.”

Hamilton student James Kamihachi says he was never an athlete in high school, but he quickly got comfortable playing korfball.

“I liked the lot of the people in korfball, made a lot of good friends here, but for me it was a game that was easy to pick up. It’s a very passing oriented game, so everyone gets to play,” Kamihachi said. “It was a sport that I could actually participate in and I actually got to point where I was reasonably good and felt confident. It was really the first team sport I’ve ever played.”

Kamihachi’s words would probably make korfball creator Nico Broekhuysen smile. Broekhuysen was a schoolteacher in Amsterdam in the early 1900s. After seeing an exhibition of a new sport called basketball in Sweden, Broekhuysen began developing a game all of his students — male and female — could play simultaneously. He unveiled korfball in Holland in 1903.

Today, the International Korfball Federation has member organizations in more than 50 countries. Here in the U.S., the game’s been played for decades. Rockport, Maine resident Rebecca Shields first played in the late 1970s at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“In the 1970s and the ’80s there was some momentum,” Shields said. “We were trying to drum up support, getting clubs started. There was one in Tulsa, Okla., in Eugene, Ore., and Houston, [and at] the University of New Mexico, so there were some clubs in different parts of the United States. Then as those people started having families and people got busy then that momentum was starting to kind of crunch.”

That’s why a small korfball event in a tiny upstate New York village attracted players from all over the country. Korfballers have a tough time getting a game.

U.S. Korfball Federation President David Warren, who makes korfball hoops and provided Hamilkorf with its first set of equipment, came all the way from West Virginia.

“I drove up here, it was about 8 hours,” Warren said. “And I came to play because it’s the only game in town. We don’t have too many events going on, so if I wanted to play I had to come.”

Warren also learned the game in the 1970s at Oral Roberts University and has played for the U.S. at multiple world championships. He says it’s frustrating to see the sport struggle here after seeing how it’s flourished overseas.

“If you go to a Dutch korfball club, you’ll have korfball players that could be 5 years old or 65 years old,” Warren said. “Some clubs might have ten teams, but every level is represented from the highest level to just recreation, kind of like softball is here. You have church teams and you have recreation teams, and you have real competitive teams and that’s the way it is over in Holland.”

After the training session at the tournament ended, scrimmaging began. A true korfball court would be 40 meters by 20 meters, roughly a third larger than a basketball court. Play carries on in front and in back of the hoops, and without a backboard in the way, shots and misses can come from any and all angles around the free-standing post.

Games last 60 minutes and with baskets worth just one point apiece, they’re not high scoring affairs. Elite teams might score between 20 and 30 points in a game. At Hamilton, with a mix of rusty veterans and developing newcomers, most of the final scores end in the single digits.

Can the new burst of enthusiasm at Hamilton launch a korfball comeback? Tournament organizer and USKF board member Louis Boguchwal is trying to get other colleges interested in korfball. He’s not sure if it will spread, but he knows the kind of people the sport needs.

“These people are definitely open-minded,” Boguchwal said. “They heard about this and they’re at least willing to show up and give it a go. They’re people who want some exercise, want to have some fun, but they don’t want to be on a team six days a week giving a couple of hours a day. They want to try something new. Also, I guess you might say there’s something kind of crazy, zany about them.”

If that sounds like you, korfball may be your sport. Nearly all of the players in the tournament say making new friends is one of the best parts of the game. It’s a small, close-knit group, but they’d love to add a few more members.

USA Korfball

The United States will not be participating in the WC in China. It is unfortunate and we hope to be able to be there in 2015. A 10-14 day tour of the Netherlands is planned for the US players around May-June 2012.
We are in discussion about having a Continental Championship (to include North and South American countries) in 2013. This tournament would be the qualifier for the next WC. The Americas Continental Championship is in the discussion stage so there are many logistical questions that have to be answered.
We also have discussed a Masters Tournament to be held in 2012 or 2013 in LA or Phoenix during the late fall, winter or early spring months when the weather is gorgeous.

Another item we discussed is starting a twinning program with clubs in Europe.

Anybody making their way over to the States should contact me, you just may be in korfball country.

A sport that emerged in the Netherlands has gained its place in Brazil, especially in large urban centers: the Korfebol. For those unfamiliar, the sport can help develop children and youth, not only in the school environment, but also in social life.

According to Marcello Beppi, physical education teacher, a representative of the sport in the country since 1998 and coach of the Brazilian Korfebol, the most important in your practice is stimulating the emotional question:

Inglish and one zone korfball

Mr. Inglish Huang (Chinese Taipei) does not expect that one zone korfball can get a chance in Taiwan, but he likes 3 vs 3 in two zones.

We have a few official indoor korfball courts with official size. But we have more than enough basketball court (28m * 15m), which is good to play 4 vs 4 as Ben expects. But basketball has been too dominant in Taiwan so I am not in favor this so-called one zone korfball, which just like basketball with the rule of non-dribbling and mixed genders playing. Taiwanese would said why I need to quit basketball to play another basketball-like sport? I has introduced 6 vs 6 playing in the basketball court with the normal korfball rules to the students and varsity players of my university. For each team, 2 males + 1 female in one zone and 2 females and 1 male in the other zone. This modified game allow coach/teacher to train the 3 major roles: attacker, feeder and rebounder with most similar pattern as 4 vs 4 within the limited playing court. Each attacking players has to possess and pass ball more frequestly because only 3 attacking players in one zone. It is fun!! Inglish

On the beach in Portugal the Dutch National Team played a new variety of Beach Korfball. They placed the posts about 12 - 15 meters from each other, in one zone.

The game was played by two teams, each consisting of 3 players. (2 male players and 1 female player or 2 female players and 1 male player)

The video shows a lot of fun and good ball control. But the female players are barely visible.
I wonder what the match with 2 female players and 1 male player in each team looked like.

I think I would prefer a team consisting of 2 men and 2 women.

England National Youth Day

50 teams took part in the 2011 National Youth Day (NYD) in Kent last Sunday.

This included a team from Milton Keynes taking part in the competition for the first time, showing the increasing interest in the sport around the country.

Karen Palfreyman and her team organised an excellent event, marking out and covering equipment for 10 pitches, organising the BBQ, sound system, and first aid, all hosted at Sparrows Den and Beccehamian Rugby Football Club facilities in West Wickham.

"It (National Youth Day) remains the key element to retention, sustainability and growth(of youth Korfball).”

Players competed from the under 9s all the way up to under 19s, with a number of internationals competing in the older age groups. Despite the warm conditions, every age group was keenly contested with very close, tight and sometimes tense games.

Youth Competitions Co-ordinator Frank Sieber said:

“The under 19s were very good this year and produced some closely contested games. Many internationals and players competing at high levels participated, for many this is the only event where they get the opportunity to play within their age group other than inter-area competition, and get to enjoy the social aspects.”

There were particularly strong results for school teams in the under 9s category, with Sprowston and recently formed Marlborogh finishing second and third respectively. Frank Sieber believes the NYD is an essential tool for embedding Korfball into schools sports programmes:

“One of the most important aspects of national youth day is the large amount of development work, especially in the Spring/Summer semester at schools with the focal point of participation at National Youth Day and the continuation of these new players within the school and club structures. It remains the key element to retention, sustainability and growth.”

“Another important aspect is the opportunity for areas to develop referees; usually assessors are on hand to assist new referees, existing referees with limited experience and those looking to progress. The RC is incredibly supportive of this event, this year many of the most senior referees were in attendance.”

In de loop der jaren is er veel veranderd in de korfbal sport. Geen middenvak meer, spelregelwijzigingen, de schotklok in de Korfbal League, de aluminium paal en natuurlijk de kunststof korf.
Deze veranderingen zijn allen bedoeld om de korfbalsport te verbeteren. Om te verbeteren, zul je ook moeten blijven investeren in de toekomst.

Dus zeker de jonge leden van een korfbalclub moet je koesteren, zij zijn de toekomst van de club.

Voor de jeugd was er altijd de rotan/rieten welpenmand: groter dan “de gewone” (60 cm ipv 40 cm in diameter) en daardoor voor de jeugd meer kans om te scoren. En júist dat scoren is zo belangrijk voor de jeugd. Dat maakt het korfballen leuk. Sinds invoering van de kunststof korf wordt de rotan/rieten welpenmand steeds minder gebruikt. Deze is veelal kapot of we willen het niet meer gebruiken vanwege het rotan/riet. Een gemiste kans want juist de grotere welpenmand motiveert jeugdspelers om te blijven korfballen. Succes (scoren) is een belangrijke factor voor de motivatie.

Het actie profiel is een geheel en combinatie van mentale en fysieke vaardigheden die nodig zijn zodat een speler zich kan ontwikkelen tot een “TOP Tijger” in korfbal.

Korfbal Vaardigheden:
De Tijger is van jongs af bezig met een bal. Hij is balvaardig, kan jongleren met de korfbal.
De Tijger is een “killer”: vele pogingen (20 -30 in een wedstrijd) met een scoringspercentage van 20% - 30%.
Het schot van afstand is de eerste optie, maar hij is altijd belust, alert, om andere opties op te pakken en te benutten;

De Tijger is maximaal gemotiveerd om doelpunten te maken. Hij wil zich hierin steeds weer verbeteren.

De Tijger kan omgaan met druk en stress. Hij toont zich stabiel in alle wedstrijdsituaties.

De Tijger kan zich snel herstellen van tegenslag. Hij is veerkrachtig.

De korfbalvaardigheden van een goede Tijger zijn:

• De Tijger is een “killer”. In iedere wedstrijd wordt van een Top Tijger verwacht dat hij 4 tot 6 doelpunten maakt. ( Als de vrije ballen en de strafworpen worden meegeteld dan scoort hij 7 tot 8 doelpunten in een wedstrijd). Hun gemiddelde schoring percentage in 20-30% (zonder dat de vrije ballen en de strafworpen worden meegeteld) De Tijger schiet per wedstrijd 20 – 30 keer per wedstrijd. De doelpunten die de Tijger maakt uit vrije ballen en strafworpen bedragen ongeveer 30% van zijn totale scores.
• In de Nederlandse competitie zijn de Tijgers meestal de mannelijke spelers. Er speelt slechts een vrouwelijke Tijger die een scoringspercentage haalt van 20 – 30%. In 14 wedstrijden scoorde zij 74 doelpunten ( daarbij waren ook 20 doelpunten uit strafworpen en vrije ballen). Het is te betreuren dat er nog steeds weinig vrouwelijke Tijgers zijn, die structureel bepalend kunnen zijn in wedstrijden.
• De Tijger beschikt over een goed schot van afstand. Van uit vrije positie schiet hij meer dan 30% raak. De score wordt negatief beïnvloed als de Tijger onder druk wordt gezet door een goede Guard Maar door de uitstekende kwaliteit van het afstandschot krijgt hij ruimte voor de andere schot opties zoals de doorloopbal en de uitwijkbal. De Tijger kan bij de gratie van de kwaliteit van het afstandschot variëren.
• Het schot van de Tijger wordt op hoofdhoogte ingezet. Daardoor is het schot van de Tijger moeilijk te blokken en de schotbaan te beïnvloeden. In de Nederlandse competitie zijn de Top Tijgers ongeveer 1.90 – 2.00 meter lang.
• De Tijger is op ieder moment in de wedstrijd in staat om tot een schot te komen. De Tijger kan omgaan met de spanning die bij zijn taak hoort. Dat betekent dat hij de wedstrijd kan openen op belangrijke momenten juist ook wanneer de spanning het hoogst is. Op die momenten neemt de Tijger de verantwoordelijkheid om te gaan voor een score. De Tijger kan evenwichtig omgaan met wat van hem verlangd wordt en zijn zelfvertrouwen. De Tijger presteert onder hoge druk, hij heeft een goede dunk van zichzelf.
• De Tijger is volledig geconcentreerd op het scoren. Hij doet per wedstrijd meer dan 20 pogingen.
• De Tijger kan duelleren met iedere Guard en hij maakt zeer effectief gebruik van de zwakke kanten van de Guard. De duels moet aan de Tijger vrije posities opleveren die gebruikt worden voor een poging om te scoren. De duels tussen Tijger en Guard wordt gekarakteriseerd door een hoog tempo en veel veranderingen van tempo en richting. De Tijger is snel en is altijd in staat ondanks de snelle aanzetten van richting te veranderen. Wanneer de Tijger in een vrije positie komt dan is hij in staat alles terug te nemen om in balans te komen (verzamelen) om dan met succes te schieten.
• De Tijger is gesteld op de Wolf. De wolf is de beste helper van de Tijger omdat deze speler zich kan inleven in de positie en het moment waarop de Tijger moet worden aangespeeld. De Wolf kan de acties op de juiste waarde schatten en daardoor effectief en efficiënt samenwerken. De meeste Tijgers zijn niet echt geconcentreerd op de kansen van de Panter, de Wolf of de Beer. De Tijger zal va nature niet zo gauw dubbelen om de Panter in een kansrijke positie te brengen.
• De Top Tijger, zal in een vrije positie op 3-6 meter van de paal nooit aarzelen om te schieten. Zelfs als hij weet dat de bal wordt verloren als het schot geen doelpunt wordt. De Tijger is altijd zeker van zijn capaciteiten.

Marcello Soares pioneers korfball in Brazil

On Tuesday, June 7, Petrópolis organized a korfball clinic in which Mr. Baby, former pivot of the Brazilian basketball selection, was also one of the visitors. This clinic was a big event promoted by the Brazilian team korfebol. The leaders of the clinic were the teachers of Educação Claudio Ferreira and Marcello Soares. The activity took place in Sesi, with the students' course of the physical education of the participation of SA Universidades Estacio and CPU.

Also present was the Minister of Municipal Sports and Recreation, Carlos Alberto Lanceta and João Henrique Areias, one of the pioneers of sports marketing in Brazil. Mr. Baby made a beautiful presentation with the students. He still did not know korfball precisely.
The players confirmed the idea that korfebol and basketball can form a great partnership in the future. At the moment, the 11th team Korfebol Brasil will present at an event promoted by the Baby in Andef (Associação Niteroiense of physical education).

Korfebol (which is how the Brasilians spell korfball): modality is the new habit of the Petropolitans (inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro) in Brazil

Mayor Paulo Mustrangi talks with korfebol teacher Marcello Bepi Soares. Marcello brought korfebol to Brazil. The sport is already played by the children of the city, who play with former-athlete Robson Caetano.

In the city of Rio, "Korfebol" is getting to be more and more wellknown. Last March 20th, the modality was present in the leisure area in the Avenue Koeler, to teacher's Janine Meireles and Márcia Ladvocat of the commission of projects of the Municipal General office of Sports and Leisure. Korfebol is a sport from Dutch origin, that has been introduced in Brazil by teacher Marcello Bepi Soares and Cláudio Ferreira. Besides having a pedagogic element, the sport doesn't just focus on competitiveness, but on people's inclusion and their personal qualities. Macello tells:

“It is impossible to practice the korfebol sport and not to fall in love with it. In this sport all the apprentices play with an equal amount of participation (different from other modalities where the most skilled have all of the chances and the others are excluded). In korfebol we dont make a distinctions between sex, height or force.
All are welcome to play korfebol, which is a cooperative game. The representatives in Brazil, teachers Marcello Bepi Soares and Claudio Ferreira were present to the event, teaching the modality and even making mayor Paulo Mustrangi play korfebol. At the end of the presentation the teachers thanked everyone for the opportunity to show the Dutch sport to the petropolitans.”

Korfebol is a choice of sports that incorporates sensational dynamic sport characteristics. For the last 10 years korfebol has been highlighted mostly within schools.

“Right now our objective is to grow the korfebol sport in Petrópolis. For that we are trying to start a partnership with the City hall, which is close to the municipal plan of sports. We also try to find a place for korfebol in the Street of Leisure; on Sundays in the Avenue Koeler. We are also looking for partnerships close to the schools and the sporting spaces of the city so that the modality can grow more quickly. Mr Marcello Bepi Soares has recently visited the city of Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro) to further develop the sport of korfball in Brazil.
On April 1st Korfball was demonstrated in the sport club "Esporteverde"and then presented via live coverage on Brazil sports television TV ADONAI.
The successful day was closed by the demonstration of Korfbal to children of the State School Odete Fonseca in Petrópolis who had the opportunity to try playing themselves as well.

This summer I want to organize a golf tournament (shotgun) for everyone who is or was active in korfball. So for women and men who are (were) a korfball player, coach, referee or administrator. Before you can enter, you need to show your GVB, otherwise you don't get admission to start.

I suggest to plan this match on Friday June 10, 2011 in Heelsum.

If we start around 1500 hours then everybody can join a meal around 20.00hr after the match.

Retirement as a professional at the KNKV

Monday, March 28 2011, there was the official reception to celebrate my retirement from KNKV as a professional.
In 1978 I became head coach and remained this position until 1993. At that time a coach was employed on a project basis, not fulltime like now. Besides my freelance job as a coach of the national team I was a physical education teacher at a school. In 1993 I was really fulltime employed at the KNKV, coordinator of topkorfball. I filled this position until 2006.
From 2006 to 2010 (European Championship in Netherlands), I was manager of the National Team.
I calculated that I spent as player from 1949 - 1983 12.000 hours in and around the pitch; as a coach I spent about 19.000 hours. As professional officer in KNKV I worked about 18.000 hours. So korfball really filled my life.
(Statistically, people in the Netherlands work about 60.000 - 70.000 hours during their life.)

On my celebration-party I met many old and new administrators, (old) internationals, players from clubteams where I was and am a coach. It was a very memorable event for me!
It was an honor to be appointed as an honorary member of the KNKV. I had a great night.

I am grateful to everyone that gave (and still gives) me a chance to work for korfball during all those years.

Korfebol in Brazil

Marcelo the pioneer from Brazil, informs us about a new initiative:
In the project that has been used for reception of resources, an image of what would be the Municipal Park: a great sporting compound. / Reproduction
Servant in January for a group of entrepreneurs, authorities and sportsmen, with the objective of creating conditions so that Petrópolis is benefitted by sporting events as the World cup of 2014 (Brazil 2014) and the Olympic Games, in Rio, in 2016 (Rio 2016), the Sporting Movement of Petrópolis (MEP) it already got to collect R$ 10 million for investments in the preparation of the city to receive delegations and selections that will need an appropriate space to accomplish trainings. "This value is already approved by the Federation of Athletics of Rio de Janeiro. It is a budget that would be addressed for another city, in the Fluminense North, and that we got to address for Petrópolis", it explains to the general coordinator of the Sporting Movement of Petrópolis, Cláudio Roche, that is president of the company Allen Informática, that brought for Petrópolis the Center of Microsoft and it began the movement to have Petrópolis as sub-thirst of the sporting events of international load.

The largest challenge of the group is to recruit resources inside for the construction of sporting facilities of the international patterns, among the ones which a sporting compound, built in agreement with the prerequisites of the International Olympic Committee (COI), in the area of the Park of Exhibitions, in Itaipava. The sporting compound is composed by stadium for athletics; arena multiuso for five thousand people, with center of conventions; swimming pool Olympic cover; center of sporting medicine; academy university of the Sport; library and museum of the sport; hotel of traffic with accommodation for 50 people; area for gymnastics for third age and sporting initiation. In agreement with the representatives of MEP, the projects are fundamental to enable Petrópolis as candidate to receive soccer selections that will dispute the Cup of the Confederations in 2013, the World cup in 2014 and the Cup of America in 2015.

For so much, the group will look for resources with investors, deprived initiative and budgets made possible through the law of fiscal incentive to the sport. The group created four new tools for reception of resources for sporting entities associated to MEP. Among these it is the Club of Sponsors of MEP (P-30), that foresees the sale of 30 patronage quotas, being 10 in the category Bronze; 10 in the category Silver; and 10 in the category Gold. "Before even of the release, we are already with four sold quotas. The first ones to acquire the quotas were Allen Informática, Acorp of Brazil, Unimed and Pled Bhering. To the whole they are 30 quotas. Besides, we created the mark "domP", to produce uniforms of sporting entities associated to the movement, as well as of employees of companies; the official fan of the Highland, that it is a kit, with shirt and cap official of the team, a clothes sporting "domP" and a card personalized for entrance in the games; and the Athlete Official Foot of Wind, kit with the new shirt and cap official Foot of Wind, exclusive bottle and personalized" card, explains to the director of businesses of MEP, João Henrique Areias.

In the category Bronze, each annual quota of patronage costs R$ 36 thousand; in the category silver, the annual quota can be acquired by R$ 48 thousand and in the category gold, each quota annual cost R$ 60 thousand. The members of the movement stress that besides associating the mark to a linked image to the sport, the company will be present also in social projects of impact close to communities of the city, through actions of social inclusion and education for the sport, sporting leisure, sporting initiation and sport for the third age. Among the activities accomplished by MEP in partnership with the City hall is Petrópolis Saúde and Leisure. We will "have a social-sporting event, with athletic orientation and of health. We will also have the leisure Street, that has the objective of to strengthen that movement and to create in the population the habit for the sport, not only to condition the athletes, but also to stimulate the sporting practice in the population, improving like this the quality of the people's" life, it considers the municipal secretary of Sports, Carlos Alberto Lanceta.

International tournaments and the statistics of korfball injuries
In autumn 2011 the World Championship korfball will be held in Shaoxing, China.

Result
The result of the tournament is important for the participating Countries; not only to defend the pride and prestige of the korfball nations, but also because the best eight Countries will be admitted to participate in World Games in 2013.
The selected players and coaches will have to do a lot of work to show their best in China.

Costs
For most countries China is far from home. The costs of the travel and accomodation are high. I hope that despite of these high costs, the quantity and the quality of the selection will not be effected. Policymakers who are serious about their sports, should not let this happen.

Injuries
The chance that a team is facing an injury from which a player is not able (temporarily or for a longer time) to play is 4.6 injuries in 1000 hours playing korfball.

Facts and Team selection
The statistics of korfball injuries can play an important role in the selection of the players (the number and types of players). In this light, it is important that the coach, while making a selection, takes both the number of hours played during the preparations and the games in China into account.

Preparation program
Most teams start their preparations in June or July. Other countries will begin in September. Most countries will have an intensive preparation program to finish.
It is important that coaches organize their programs to motivate the players. I have noticed an apparent connection between the players chance of injury and the commitment or involvement in the training. When players show involvement and commitment, the chance of injury seems to be lower than when players are not really involved in the program. Players who are really involved in the program seem less bothered by overtraining, which is one of the important causes of injuries.

The risk of injury remains high, however the training and competitive program are compiled. The figure of a 1000 hours of training alone during the preparations is easily achieved.
Besides this, the physically and mentally though game series in China must be taken into account. Every coach should count on injuries, and thus involve substitution players. One of the key inputs in the composition of the preparation program is the program of the World Championships (games and practices during the tournament)
During a tournament a team trains and plays every day.
This means, for most teams: 3 hours per day korfball and a recovery within 24 hours.
The recovery is often underestimated, and most injuries result from poor work and rest balance. Maybe this is because the balance between work and rest are not well trained.

A simple mathematical insight:
If a team with 16 players in a World Championship works 2 times a day, then the team plays a total of 16 x 3 hours = 48 hours per day
This means that during a tournament of 14 days 48 x 14 = 672 hours are played, which comes down to a total of 3.22 chance of injury during those 14 days

Selection of players
The number of players that participate in the selection period should be quite adequate to cope with injuries. Coaches are best prepared when they start the preparation with 24 players. Short before the departure to China, they can check back to 18 or 16 players.
Besides this, I think that the IKF would do well to broaden its rules: A selection should be able to consist of 18 players

The type of player that should be selected, should be more than an average good all rounder with a perfect specialization.
It is therefore advisable not only to select many bears and tigers.
Also regarding the defense must be precisely selected. Not every great center can play guard.

Injuries in Korfball

In our sport, Korfball, the chance to get an injury is rather high.
Normally there are 1.9 injuries in 1000 hours of playing a sport.
In korfball there are 4.6 injuries in 1000 hours of playing korfball.

What are the causes of sport injuries?
Almost half of the presented korfball injuries (49%) occur when the player falls. In almost one third of the cases, the injury occurs through contact with an object, usually a ball.
A smaller part of the players, are injured by personal contact or acute physical (over)load.
Most injuries occur while playing a game (69%). Fewer injuries happen during training. (27%)
The top five factors that contributed to injuries (according to the injured player) are as follows:
* contact with players (36%)
* stumbling and twisting (19%)
* wrong landing (15%)
* turning (15%)
* Description (11%)

What is the nature of the injuries?
32% of injuries to the fingers
33% are ankle injuries (usually an ankle distortion).
8% of the injured players have a knee injury or a knee distortion. An Achilles tendon rupture is rare.
Besides this: seven out of ten injuries are acute. The number of injured women and men is the same.
The average duration of an injury is 31 days.

Hospital admissions
Hospitalization and surgery are likely in the case of knee injuries like meniscus and cross tendon injury.
Hospital admissions for korfball injuries (1%) are less common than injuries that incurred by other sports (5%)

Korfball players /students of this university, gave a show where korfball is in the centre.
It is a great idea this show. "A choreography around the korf".

In other countries they can imitate such a show?
May be this is a possiblity to raise money? So that everybody who is selected as a player can come to WC 2011 in Shaoxing.
May be every country can show their own choreographic dance around the korf as a side event during WC?

PKC - DVO scoring without Bear in position

Normally an attack needs an organisation where the Bear has settled his rebound position. There was hardly a finish of the attack in 4-0 pattern.
Now because the percentage of shooting becomes higher than 30%, the risk to go for a shot is more often taken without a Bear in rebound position.
The tension between control of ball possesion and the risk loosing the ball is changing to take more and more the risk.
Besides that: Hunting for "the 2nd ball" gets more important.

Talented women in National Team

If you look at the physical facts of the Dutch Youth team under 21 and you make a comparison with the physical facts of the woman of the National Team, than you can conclude:

The women of the National Youth Team under 21 are a bit less athletic than the woman of the National Team.

The young girls of the Dutch team are smaller than the women of the national team:
There is a difference in average body length of 7 cm. ( 1.715 - 1. 78)
(We did not count the height of the tallest woman of the national Team in this average. She is 1.98 m.)

The young women have more body weight. (67.1 kg - 66kg)

The reach height of the young woman is on the average 8 cm difference (2.22m – 2.30m) and the jump height is almost the same difference: (2.71m - 2.80m)

The women talents will not change in height, weight and in reach with jump...(I expect.)
However I don’t use their names in the article I will give some remarks about my expectations for their future.
I use for this, my definition of roles: Tiger; Bear; Wolf and Panther. Roles are based on physical and mental skills.

There are 3 women who are very talented. I expect that they can play in 1 or 2 years as a player of the National Team.

a. The tallest girl (1.80m) is a good attacker (Panther). She is a very good runner with a large action radius. She can also play as a Wolf. Very important for her is to learn to read her opponents. She plays too much on intuition. Her fighting spirit is outstanding.

b. The best talent is only 1.74m. But she can play as Tiger, Panther and Wolf. She is really very promising. Her character is a bit introvert. She needs to communicate more to her teammates.

c. The girl who is 1.73 is still doing top korfball light hearted. Sometimes you can call this attitude playful. She is really skilful: can run and jump, can attack, and can defend.
when she wants to reach the top then she should develop a mentality of a fighter. She promised to be a Panther and Wolf. But if she can change her attitude then every coach can use her as well as a Tiger.

Especially the last part about player, who in your opinion can develop as a top tiger, but he will never play in National Team because he is not very tall, gave me to think. And here goes my question:

isn`t it too radical, and maybe even harmful to say that he will never play in National Team just becasue he is small? Of course I see your point in this article- top players should be flexible,
and they have to play on the highest level in different roles on the field, but still- don`t you consider situation when for example player 1.80 m tall, who is a great tiger, and score much more goals than
taller players will play in Dutch National Team? What is more, this is not just imaginary situation. Nevertheless Casper Boom is an example for relatively short player, who is in Dutch National Team.
Also I have to meantion players like Bart Cleyman, Mitch Lenaerts or Ricky Wu- all of them are not very tall, but they play on the international top level.

So you think that if they were Dutch, they wouldn`t play in National Team?

As I said earlier, I understand that tall players are welcome in modern korfball, and it is important on top level that man can play equally effectively as a tiger, and as a bear , but is this really mean
that players shorter than 1.90 m can not even dream about being the best players in the world?

Hi Adam,
Body length is now and in the future important feature for top korfball players.

I did not say/ mean that there is no chance for smaller men, like < 1.80 m.
In particular I gave some remarks about that fellow who is 1.83. The remark has to do with more observations than only his body length.
I see this man playing and training regularly in the national team under 21 . Then I observe how he is never rotating and never trying changing the Tiger role for Panther or Wolf. For the Bear role as his specialism, he is too small. Even a small man can rebound succesfully, by looking for the best position and reading and blocking the position of the opponent and recognise where the the ball will come down.
Mentally he wants to show himself only as a Tiger. He plays very often in a tunnel
So I give a prediction for this moment. It is a challenge for this man to show that he can be more valuable in the team, especially to cooperate in different ways with his teammates.
I cannot tell really the future but for now I gave him no chance.

Thank you for so quick answer.
From your article on the blog I understood that a small player will not play in National Team just because he is not able mentally to play more flexible. He should play also as a Wolf and Panther, not only as a Tiger, but he does not do this. It is not necessary for him to try go for the rebound because of his lenght.
So generally, the important thing is to develop yourself in different roles, even if somebody is not very tall, he can be very valuable in the team as a Tiger, Wolf and Panther, and can became top player.
By the way- you do really great job on your blog. It is probably the best source of korfball knowledge online. I can`t wait to see your next article!

Talents: All Rounders and Specialists
Talents are promises. They have to learn to compete and to win on the highest level.
A week ago I published the physical facts of the Dutch talent team (under 21)
Now I will make a comparison with the real top, the players of the Dutch National team

Average for male players:
Dutch National Team - Talents (under 21)

Body Height 1.95 m - 1.91 m

Weight 85 kg - 80.5 kg

Reach 2.55 m - 2.47 m

Reach with Jump from Stand 3.28 m - 3.18 m

Comment:
The talents have to grow as well in body length, in weight and in reach with jump.
That will happen for there are very young men ( 19 years) in this group.
So if you look at the physical facts they have the promises that they will develop in the same way as the players of the national team.

However I d'not use their names in the article I will give some remarks about my expectations for their future.

I use for this, my definition of roles: Tiger; Bear; Wolf and Panther. Roles are based on physical and mental skills.
In my vision Top Players can play all round, in all roles and should have a very good level as a Tiger. Besides that they can excel in other roles.
Rotation of roles should be the basic option for the players of the National team!
So a top korfball player can be a specialist in one role but should have a high level to fulfill other roles.

In my opinion there are only two players in this group of talents who show that they can be a national team player in the next future. These two players can kill ( very good distance shot); can play a 1-1 duel (can go into the mental and physical fight); can pass and can read other players ( can communicate, cooperate and have split vision, is game intelligent = can read the game); can rotate in every role ( body strength under the post; can read the ball, can time to go in other positions; has a large action radius).

May be there are two players more (3 and 4) who can develop the skills which are needed for the players of the national team:

3. There is a remarkable Bear. Around the post he is a winner of rebounds. But he is not really a winner in finishing a good chance. He is a terrible shooter and shows a lack of fantasy. He can still learn to play more effective end with more fantasy.

4. The other man is skillful with the ball. But his action as a Tiger is totally not impressive. The movements (running) are too slow and too much as a dancer (circle movements). The movements are not sharp enough. He has a good talent for cooperation and communication. But he misses the real acceleration which is needed for Tiger and Panther.

In this group of talents there is only one player who can develop as a top Tiger. But this man is just too small for to rotate in the Bear role. He will be very valuable in a club team but he will never play in the National Team. He is not flexible enough in the way he shows his possibilities in the other roles during the match.

As we can see in top korfball matches there are Shooting techniques that are changed.
1. The distance shot.
By the influence of the interpretation of the rule the technique of the distance shot has changed.
The rule:
3.6.n. During the game it is prohibited:
to shoot from a defended position
A shot must be considered defended when the hindering defender satisfies the following
conditions:
�� he must actively be trying to block the ball AND
�� whilst actively trying to block the ball he must
i) be within arm’s length of the attacker
ii) have his face turned towards the attacker and
iii) be nearer the post than the attacker.

The rule gives more options to the attackers to avoid actively the defender position and the hands.

That makes that the distance shot starts when the assist is straight and high. The demands of a good assists is: "High to high". The assister gives the ball from above the head the shooter receives the ball: head height.
The timing, speed and the direction of the assist makes it possible for the shooter to step backwards in a line that is centered by the post.
The shooter should move behind the “coming” ball and should make a center line with the post.
By the good assist he can make profit of the new technique.

The technique of distance shot:

The distance shot should be prepared before the shooter receives the ball.
The balance of the shooter is collected mostly on one leg, before he receives the ball. The balance foot is pointed to the post.
The ball is caught by the hands in a way that the motion of the shot can start directly.
The shooter leave some space between the ball and the middle of the palm. The elbows should be positioned comfortable under the ball.
The ball stays in front of the head.
The shooter uncoils his body with the legs, core and arm power all coordinated.
The hands are steering the ball when they extend in a straight line to the korf.
The delivery (release) of the ball is just before the full stretch of the arms.
The hands come off with a bit symmetrical backspin.

Some English persons were disappointed that the Dutch became (still) the winner in the EC 2011!

To improve the playing level for instance in England costs money energy and good governance is also needed!

May be I got the wrong information? But.....
As long national players can only be selected to play important international tournaments for the national team when they are ready to pay a part of a total amount of the costs of lodging and board you never get the best players.

Money:
England needs a kind of saving fund in which every korfball player pays for international korfball. When every player pays each month 1 pound then the finances for sending the best team can be secured. England can select the best players.
The participation of World Championship will be very costly.

Governance:
Already in 1948 and again in 1992 KNKV invested money and energy, to help the English Korfball, to improve the association and the playing level. During my period as national coach (1978 - 1993) , the Dutch national team visited several times England, for promoting korfball and played then during weekends matches against the English national team. These trips lasted every time more than 5 days!
There were also clinics for coaches and top players. Every time it seemt to be very difficult to collect the best people.

English korfball exists already more than 60 years.
Since a short time I heard really optimistic and positive stories about the competition and the spreading out korfball all over the country. There are young energic people who establish a better competition. The National Team of England is young and especially the men are talented.
So I think there is a new and better future.

Help and development
I know for sure that the KNKV will invest money to help England and every country in the world. KNKV wants more countries who have a better playing level. KNKV wants more A countries.
But now a days KNKV don't give help if they cannot see that people who get the help are not really going for independency.

Korfball Aid
KNKV is ready to give knowledge to every country that shows that they have a healthy governance, a good competition and people who really like korfball as a fantastic sport.

Dutch teams travelled last summer to Spain and China. KNKV national teams will go to every country if there is any serious prove that a country will promote korfball and develop the playing level. There should be plans of action.

Talented and ambitious, foreign players are welcome in the Netherlands, to show their talent and to participate in the KL Teams.

Korfball as an outdoor sport has a long history in the Netherlands.
When I was 10 years old I spent almost every day playing some kind of outdoor street korfball on a small piece of grass, nearby my home, that had a korfballpost. All my schoolmates joint this activity. These korfball pitches were quite common and found nearby the houses and often the elementaryschool.
Today, there is still outdoor korfball in the Netherlands, but a lot has changed as well. Clubs now have artificial grass pitches and a clubhouse where the members of the club can meet eachother after trainings and matches. But the biggest change in outdoor korfball is maybe that the pitch can no longer be found in the centre of the village or nearby a school. Korfball outdoor is banned from the centre of the cities and villages; instead you can only find the pitches in the outskirts. Since some years there were initiatives by famous Dutch sportsmen, Cruijff (soccer) and Krajicek (tennis) to found special pitches and playgrounds in the cities where young people can train themselves in soccer or tennis.
However, before today there were no special playgrounds for outdoor korfball.
In Leeuwarden a member of club Wêz Warber, mr Gosse Dijkstra fulfilled this dream. He realised a special korfball court nearby houses and two elementary schools. But the most special thing to me was that that this court got named after me: the CRUM Korfball Court. I am very honoured and very gratefull!

Defense strategey and tactics

On the 22th of January 2009 I wrote about the order of objectives for the defence.
I think it is very important that the defender knows how to work with this order (strategy / tactics) during a match.

Sun Tzu Quote (“The Art of War”): “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat..”
If the reader can visualize an attack then he/she can imagine what the defender can do tactically.

Step 1: When the ball enters the attack, there will be pressure on position and pressure on accepting the ball.
Normally the ball enters the attack nearby the middle line. Here an attacker will accept the ball. The first objective of the attacker is to make an organization where all the players can come and play with the ball in their shot range. Obviously, an attacker who cannot accept the ball is not dangerous. An attacker who plays outside his/her shot range, is also not dangerous. The defense can start to hinder players to accept the ball in their shot range.

The defenders must always work to put pressure on the positions and possibilities (where and how) of the attacker to accept the ball. This means that while every defender plays as a guard, he or she should not only focus on the movements of the attacker in a 1-1 situation. The defender has a double task: he also has to know the position of the ball. Thus, by taking the position of the guard, the defender has to construct a triangle makes a triangle in his/her position:
a. so that he/she can observe his/her personal opponent;
b. the player who plays the ball and
c. the korf

So the defender is not defending precisely on the main ax of attacker and korf. He also has to keep enough distance from the attacker to change from an "open" to a "closed" (totally 1-1) position. In an open position (when there is 1 or 2 meters distance between defender and attacker), the defender can hunt his opponent, by giving pressure on position or sometimes even on the ball line.
The ball line is the line between the player who will pass the ball and the player who will accept the ball.
In an attack there are normally three possible ball lines. These lines are the lines between the player who possesses the ball and the three other players.
A good defender is reading and calculating which line is the most favorable and which line is the most predictable ball line. From his position he can work to exclude (close) the ball line from his opponent or to put enough pressure on the position of the attacker to make him move out of shot range.
A defender has success with his play when the attacker has to move further from the korf or when the attacker accepts the ball when he is not faced to the korf (centralized).

Step 2: Sun Tzu Quotes

First of all, the defender should know his own possibilities and limitations. Besides this, the defender should know the preferences of his opponent.
In training and matches the player can learn what his own possibilities are. The coach can be a guide for the player to help him to be aware of his talent (of course, a coach and players can also use video).

Before the match the coach can make a picture of the opponent:
• The lineup
• The process of the set-up of the attack
• The structure of the attack (3-1; 2-2a)
• The preferred roles of the players; the technical preferences and implementation of the players (strong and weak points)

Step 3: A defender should be aware that he/she has to change roles.
Mostly there is a development in defense, that moves from action to re-action

Step 4 Defense and cooperation

In modern korfball defense is not an individual action; there are the systems of front defense and back defense. But by a special implemenation of roles there are possiblities to cooperate between the two. The Center, Guerrilla and the Hunter roles can be used especially well to cooperate with the Guard.

"For over 25 years the Mikasa K5, k5-ft has been the international match standard korfball, used at all official IKF events."

"To achieve the status "IKF Approved" a korfball must adhere to the IKF Regulations. Aside from Mikasa other brands such as Molten, Balans and Gala started the process of developing a new ball."

As of now, 29 September, ( there was the official presentation in Rotterdam, the Netherlands), all IKF events will use the Mikasa K5-IKF!

We are anxious to hear if this ball "Mikasa K5-IKF" will be a success.

My opinion:

The material of the cover is really innovative and really very good for playing korfball.
The ball is great but only for indoor use. On the artificial grass pitches the sand will stick on the ball.
The ball has the wrong colours and is not very good in contrast with floor and korf. The ball disappears to the background in both video and photos.

The corporate colours of Mikasa (Blue and Yellow) do not make the ball, "a real korfball".

International Korfball Federation and MIKASA introduce a new korfball

The sport of korfball is set to introduce a revolutionary new ball. Apart from its size and shape – which remains spherical – the ball is brand new in every other respect: design, material and colours.
On Wednesday 29 September 2010 the new International Match Standard Korfball will be unveiled in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. On behalf of IKF President Mr. Jan Fransoo, and the IKF Executive Committee, we invite you to attend the official media presentation, where the new korfball will be revealed. This is an exciting, modern korfball that will take our sport into the future. It has improved grip for the players, improved visibility for spectators and media, and a dynamic design that will attract increased interest to korfball from young and old.

The IKF European Championship 2010 is the first event that will use the new Mikasa K5-IKF as the International Match Standard Korfball. This Championship will (from 22 October) be held in five cities in The Netherlands: Almelo, The Hague, Leeuwarden, Tilburg and Rotterdam. The final will take place on the 31st October 2010.
Mikasa and the IKF have a long standing partnership and the development of the new ball is the fruit of a significant period of close and productive collaboration. The new ball further demonstrates Mikasa’s customary high quality production standards. We hope to meet you in person on 29 September in the Topsportcentrum, Van Zandvlietplein 20 in Rotterdam.

New Korfball Platform

Last night the Dutch team played a match against the German Team.
This was the first match in which the new Mikasa ball was been used.

After watching this game, I want to give a few remarks about this first introduction. In my opinion, the yellow korf and the yellow and blue ball do not give a good contrast. I wonder why these colors were chosen. I know that yellow and blue are the corporate colours of Mikasa, but I am sure that if the "Korfball world" buys about 50.000 balls each year, Mikasa could produce the korfball in the colours the korfball world would prefer!

Something more positive: the surface of the ball is rough. It feels like a hard, dry sponge. As far as I have understood, the players appreciate this.

IKF introduces a new MIKASA korfball

On 25 -1-2010 I wrote an article on my blog:

During the last days this article got many visitors.
My article and proposal for a new ball has nothing to do with the new ball wich will be used at the EC 2010 in the Netherlands. This new ball has been developed by MIKASA in cooperation with IKF.
The Dutch team and all the other participating National Teams of EC 2010 will get about 10 new balls in the end of September, so that they can get accustomed to this ball, during their 6 weeks preparation period.
Personally I saw and felt a sample of this new ball only one time.

The colours of the ball did not make me happy: Blue and Yellow. I think it looks like the modern volleyball. The material of the outside of the ball is very different from the korfball and basketball and I think it felt rather strange. Maybe the players, the audience and TV spectators like these changes. We will see..

Korfball and LTAD

Last month I received the following e-mail from a PKC technical manager:

"During our vacation I look an extended at your blog and collected the necessary documents to prepare for internal discussion about our korfball technical policy in the youth. I think many of the documents that you publish are very appealing and recognizable from your approach over the past two years by PKC. The emphasis on team sports, korfball concepts, the roles and qualifications players are a good guide for our activities amongst the youth. The pieces are, however, mostly focused on elite athletes. Have you also considered how the youth, the base of the club, - aged between 12 -15 should look like?

1. how do we implement a sound pathway that will educate players from a beginning to an end station, and how would you introduce (in phases?) the certain aspects of your vision ...
2. Starting from the players childhood, how can we efficiently develop a healthy korfbal society?
3. How do you instruct a technical framework and which accents would you describe in the different age groups?

I am looking forward to hearing from you once you have the opportunity for this ... "

My answer:

Over the years I regularly wrote about the learning and teaching of korfball to the different age groups and top korfball players.

My first book was (1972) ¨Juveniles Training" (pink cover) encompassed a methodology for children, aged 8-10 years. This book was one in a series that was issued by the KNKV (the “Committee of the Technical Education of the KNKV”). The series was designed for coaches who worked with different age groups. The next book "Training Korfball", (green cover) of the same series was also written by me. These books are now only available through the antiquarian bookshop.

The latest books on the teaching and learning of korfball that I've written:
“Eenvoudige korfbalvormen en sterren van nu", October 2005, 5th edition;
ISBN :90-72323-07-6; KNKV Zeist, has been translated into English under the name: "Korfball Made Simple. About the present stars in korfball". My book "Korfbal Concepten" 2003, Edition 1, ISBN: 90-807931-16 KNKV Zeist has also been translated into English as: "Korfball Concepts"

Anyone who follows the international literature, will meet the abbreviation LTAD (Long-Term Athlete Development Model). This is short for a model that represents the pathway for the training of athletes, from child to adult.
The he principles of Korfball training are very much alike the concept of LTAD and have always been present in the KNKV. This is why LTAD cannot be called a "new" in korfbal. It is good however, to go back and look and compare what happens in other sports. Therefore I would like to briefly focus on the framework of the LTAD model.

It is a long - term player / athlete development model that, with the help of illustrations can help coaches, parents, volunteers and administrators."

This model is used in several countries and is adjusted for each sport. The model takes into account the developing characteristics of a child that grows into adulthood.

The first phase, called "fundamentals" is aimed at children from 6 to 9 years.
In this phase, the joy of movement and play are central. Children will learn all basic forms of movements and exercise such as running, jumping, falling, balancing, sliding, floating on water. After this, they return to sport types or sport games.
The second phase is called "LEARN TO TRAIN" and focuses on boys and girls aged 9 to 12 years.
During this phase trainers focus on the particular window that belongs to this age, also know as "The period of engine development" or "The Golden Age of learning skills”.
Phase 3 is the stage of "TRAIN TO TRAIN" and involves children aged 11 - 15 years. In this period the children learn to systematically train the technique and tactics of a chosen sport. In these years, a more strategic approach can be consistently adopted. However, the emphasis of the trainings should still also lie on the fundamental movement skills
Phase 4: "TRAIN TO COMPETE" involves players from 15 to 18 years: in this phase the focus shifts from development to winning.
Phase 5: in this phase players compete: they "LEARN TO WIN" and "TRAIN TO WIN"

Olympic Games 2016

The challenge is to design a vertical structure on the island of Cotonduba that will become both a benchmark symbol and an observation tower to welcome the newcomers in Rio.
Designed by RAFA firm headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, the proposed construction is called "Solar City Tower". This structure has the potential to generate enough energy not only for the Olympic city, but also for parts of the city of Rio.
Rafas design stores solar energy during the day. The surplus energy produced is used to pump sea water higher up the tower to finally give the effect of an outside waterfall. When the water finally hits the ground again, the energy of the pumped water will be reused with the help of turbines which are designed to produce energy during the night.
These characteristics give the epithet tower generator the opportunity to become a continuation of some of the resolutions made during the Earth Summit United Nations in 1992 that took place in Rio. Besides this, it will also to promote the use of natural resources and energy amongst the people.

The tower has an amphitheater, an auditorium, a cafeteria and shops accessible on the ground floor, where you can take an elevator that leads to various observatories. Besides this the tower has a retractable platform for the practice of bungee.
At the top of the tower, it will be possible to appreciate the scenery around the island.

Cooperation and Control
Cooperation is a basic feature of korfball. By passing the ball to each other, players cooperate and communicate towards a goal. To get to a scoring chance, passing the ball to eachother is important.
Passing is therefore a basic part of korfball - it is the build up of the scoring of a goal. The passing of the ball is also a good opportunity for the opponent to intercept. This is why control is needed when passing the ball.
Passing the ball is communication; it depends on a shared game language. It is very important that there is a consensus between the attackers about the objectives of the passing (which must be hidden for the defenders). Passing the ball can have the objective of an assist. This means that the assist wants the receiver to go for a shot. Attackers should also avoid that defenders can disturb their communication.
In general “passing the ball” is the same as the planning of a goal. This why passing the ball can have the objective of a threat for the defense player. When an attacker accepts a ball, the defender has to react. Of course the attacker want the defender to react a certain way.

Timing and Direction
Timing and direction are two very important parts of cooperation. Tempo is important to the speed of the pass. It is basically a quality of timing. At basis or the direction of the pass stand two attackers interacting, and taking into account the interaction of the defenders. The direction of a pass is based on the consensus or communication between the attackers. This communication is based on common knowledge of each others roles and qualities, and paths towards selected positions.
Of course only during the many trainings attackers learn to understand each other. I believe that every training should be game-like. There is no korfball training without playing a match like game!

1. look before you leap? "Control and Risk"

I think it is very important that a coach reflects on his vision and his approach every year.
At the moment I think a lot about the tension between control and risk taking in the korfball game.
Actually this topic has played in my head for longer time, but it has become more of an issue because of the Dutch soccer style; the so called “circulation football”.
The Dutch soccer game is characterized by ball possession and controlling. In this game-type the ball is played often wide or even backwards. Teams in the Netherlands take hardly any risks; they avoid losing the ball. They don’t play straight to the “16” of the opponent; they forget that you can fight for the ball and hunt the so called "second ball". It seems that this kind of risk taking have been banned in the Netherlands game-style.

But taking risk by playing with depth and with more players before the ball is actually quite natural, for several reasons.
- In soccer the ball is always playable; the ball is never really untouchable for the opposite party.
- Scoring goals is rather difficult; in the Netherlands they call a soccer match that finishes with more than 8 goals a “korfball result”.
- Relatively there are only a small number of real shots on goal. Compared to sports like korfball, basketball and handball scoring chances are scarce in football.

But “circulation football”, the modern Dutch style, is boring and annoying.

In korfball it seems that control is also starting to dominate in favor of taking risks. Moreover, controling the ball is something that is even part of the player-rules, because korfball has protected ball possession. Moreover, control while in ball possession is also reflected in the attack tactic. Because a shot is only taken when a fellow attacker is in a rebound position.
Just like in soccer, control in the korfball game also leads to boredom and boring patterns.

The tactic “only shooting if there is a rebounder” seems to have a reason, when one considers that shots from about 8-10 meters under the pressure of the defender has a 14% success rate (Source: distance shot season PKC 09/10). Besides that, the rebound from a failed distance shot has a higher success rate. Moreover, a defense with multiple shots per attack also creates a greater pressure.

But there is another consideration that may lead to a different tactic.

In the korfball game both parties get the ball around 80 times into an attack mode. The number of shots from distance in a match is about 70 to 80 attempts, of which about 14% is scored. So there are plenty of attempts from distance. The success rate of a distance shot is low. This is why the tactic “shoot if there is a rebound” sustains. When every player of a team can improve, the quality of the distance shot, for example 20 to 25%, the tactic of “just shooting with a rebounder in position” devaluates. So: the quality of the distance shot determines the balance between taking risk and control on ball possession.

It is clear to me:
Good shooters from distance can make the korfball game more attractive.
Shooters with talent are the key players.
This is why the distance shot with the “pressure” of the defender should get more attention in training.
The quality of the distance shot must go up!

The “Sunshine Sports” students’ korfball league, from April 23 to May 11, was capped off in the south gym of Zhengzhou University. The tournament was sponsored by the Youth League Committee and hosted by Department of Physical Education .There were 22 colleges took part in this game .Each college had one team . Through the fierce rivalry, teams from the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Management Engineering College and Business College won the top three. The “Spiritual Award” was conferred on 3 teams, which were from Basic Medical College, Physical and Engineering College, and the Faculty of Chemical and Energy.
This contest was the highest ever in a athletic level within the campus. According to the principle “Friendship first, competition second”, they conducted a full exchange experience through mutual learning, fair competition and established a profound friendship. The atmosphere was charged with excitement in the game, and the competition had demonstrated our students’ positive mental outlook as well as their comprehensive technical and tactical skills in this field.
Moreover, in order to strengthen the friendship and enhance the cohesion between students, to enrich their after-school life, also for the purpose of attracting more students to know and love this sport, the students Korfball Club held the first “Korfball Carnival” on the afternoon of April 25 in the central korfball court.
This activity was sponsored by the Department of Physical Education. There were a lot of interesting parts. First of all, every team actively took part in the group event “catch-pass and shot”. All players were very skillful so that the record was being constantly reset by new ones. Eventually, Chemical and Engineering College came out on top, with 20 goals in 2 minutes. After that was the “tacit agreement on moving the ball”. Requiring not only speed but also grand tacit understanding between male and female players, it was not easy at all. It reflected the notion of teamwork in Dutch ball. Next, the venue of individual event “fixed penalty” was packed with people. Under the guidance of the staff, the match went on smoothly. The rules were simple, and in accordance with the penalty standard of the sport. If one got 3 shots out of 5, he/she would be awarded with a nice gift. However, it was not easy to complete it excellently. The event’s highlight was the “creative shots”. Despite the light rain, the enthusiasm of the students didn’t get affected. Players, individual and collective, tried their best to make all kinds of dazzling and innovative shots. Accordingly, they won great cheers and thunderous applause from the judges and the audience. It was at this point that the atmosphere came to a climax.
Friendship between the students was enhanced and the joint effort was realized through the event .

I am in the process of trying to sort out how to send the book aboard. To be honest I never thought that other people out side of the UK would be interested! So far I have had people from Istanbul, Germany, NZ and Spain contact me.

I had met you several years ago when you visited Buckmore Park in Kent with a Dutch team, but you wont remember me. I have also read several of your books about Korfball which I found very interesting.

Please let me explain why I have decided to write this manual.

I had been teaching infant and junior children for over 30 years before taking early retirement 10 years ago. Since that time I have been trying to develop the sport in schools because to me Korfball promotes the physical, mental, moral, social and cultural development of the player. I think it is the ideal sport to add to our National Curriculum which is taught in school, which just seems to focus on football, netball, hockey, basketball, dance, gymnastics and swimming. This has been very difficult, as some schools and teachers do not want to try a sport that they have never heard of and never seen played. Some junior teachers are even expected to teach sport when they are not sporty themselves, while in our secondary schools we do have trained sports teachers but they have their favourite sports and they too have never heard of Korfball.

I soon realised that it is not enough just to go into schools and get the children hooked on Korfball, it is the teachers and other sport coaches I need to target. I felt I needed to find a Korfball book which would deal with the very basics of the sport and help the teachers causing them as little stress as possible during the learning process. Teachers in England have strict guidelines they have to follow to cover the National Curriculum. I couldn't find a book so I decided to write one.

I do not pretend to know everything about Korfball, and continue to learn new things as I go along. I know that there will be parts of the manual which you will not agree with or wonder why I use certain methods of coaching. I have just put down methods which work for me when teaching a class of 25+ children on my own, using 2 posts, cones, balls and bibs for one hour a week. Schools would not be allowed to teach Korfball during the school day for a whole year as it is felt that the children should experience a whole range of sports such as those mentioned above.

In a few schools in Medway, Kent, I have the support of the local Sports Development Team to teach korfball for 5 weeks and during this time I try to show the class teachers the basics of the sport. This way the children and teachers are learning at the same time. Once the children are keen I offer them the opportunity to join a korfball club. This is very difficult as parents have to be persuaded to bring their child to a Korfball club when they have never heard of Korfball or seen it played. I try to publicise Korfball as much as possible in the local newspapers and gradually people are becoming more aware of the sport.

Another thing which I feel stops the development of Korfball in the UK is the high cost of the equipment e.g. posts, korfs and balls. I can get the posts made in this country but the cost of getting the balls and korfball baskets from Holland is high. Junior Schools do not have a lot of money to spend on their PE departments and have to buy equipment for other sports as well. I would welcome any ideas you have to help resolve this major problem.

To help promote the sport, I started a new Korfball Club called Tornadoes 6 years ago, and now have 13 teams playing in the Kent, Regional and, as from next season, the Premier leagues. Some of the first children to join now play for England and one for Scotland. The club has teams in all the age groups from under 9s to seniors. The seniors cater for those players who just want to play for fun and to keep fit, while the top 2 teams play at a higher level. During this time Dave and Corrine Buckland have joined the club and we have benefited greatly from their expertise and experience at playing top level Korfball.

A few years ago I wrote a Korfball Skills Award Badge Scheme so that children could work towards improving their Korfball skills and get badges to sew on to their skirts and shorts. They have to pass basic technical exercises which I have linked with key stages in the National Curriculum in the hope of making them appeal to schools. At the moment there are some clubs in the UK which use the scheme which acts as a reward to motivate their juniors.

All the Kent Korfball Clubs in Medway and Maidstone are working really hard to encourage youngsters to play the sport and we are seen as being one of the most progressive areas for youth development in the UK.

The discussion started by Karl Sieber is very interesting.
I notice a different culture, atmosphere.
I understand more than ever that korfball is not from us, people from the Netherlands .
But what we have in common is that we like korfball very much.

Another aspect I learnt form your e mail.
Korfball in England gets still more a sport in the school. (Here in the Netherlands we like the club system)
May be it was a basic mistake by Mr Albert Milhado to start korfball in England as well with a club system.
I think that it is the reason that korfball never became a real popular sport in England ?
Any way it last a long time before korfball became an international sport for English players and the BKA.

May be I am wrong?

Sorry for the delay in replying to your email but I have been helping my son to move into his new house.

I found your email very interesting.
The reason I am going into schools is that I can target a large number of children in one go. The normal number of children in one class can be anything from 25-32.
In an hour I can introduce to them to the very basics of Korfball and they will all have experienced playing in a game. Hopefully they will have enjoyed the lesson so much that they go home and tell their parents about it. They will have been given leaflets about a korfball club and sometimes their parents phone me and ask if their child can come along to the club's training session. This is the only way I can think to get Korfball known to more people.

On June 12th I have organised the 10th Kent and Medway Schools Korfball tournament and this year I have more teams entering, especially at the u11 age group. This helps local Korfball clubs to try and get more players to join them. The Tournament has sections for u9s, u11s and u16s. I try to get the teachers to come along so that they can see what this game is all about.

Please find attached and order form for the coaching manual. As I have said before you will probably disagree with some of my coaching exercises but remember I am dealing with a class of children on my own who know nothing about Korfball.

Following many adverse comments about the so called “quick tap” style of free pass, the IKF Exco asked the Playing Rules Committee (PRC) to investigate the effect such a type of pass was having on the game and, if necessary, come up with a proposal to change the rules in such a way as to leave the other requirements of the rule unchanged and at the same time, if possible, make any subjective judgment required by the referee to be either not required or be as easy as possible.

The PRC examined the statistics gathered from top matches in the Netherlands and Belgium and found that where such a free pass was taken the success rate was becoming more like the success rate for a penalty, thereby making the award of a free pass “no longer fit the crime”.

Comment: There were 744 penalties given in the Korfbal League competition (2009 - 2010).
The scoring was 673. The success rate of a penalty is thus: 90.4%.

There are indeed some specialists who scored a high percentage (45%) of the given free passes. Roxanne Detering from Koog Zaandijk scored 44 goals out of 65 free passes (67.69%)
However these specialists are few. Moreover, the success rate is not as high as the PRC suggests, which is clear from this diagram (data gathered over 18 matches in the Korfbal League):

This leaves me with the question why the IKF really changes the rules and forbids "tapping". There has to be a valid reasons for changing the rules of the game, or is tapping simply not fancy enough, i.e. do people just not like to see this kind of free pass?

The PRC had already stopped that type of pass from being taken in a forwards direction by stopping the taker from placing his foot nearer to the post but even with the pass being taken sideways or backwards, players have become so proficient that it was still becoming almost non-defendable.
Therefore, from 1 July 2010, the playing rules have been changed and the free pass will become much more like its name – a pass. The ball will need to travel at least 1m through the air (measured parallel to the ground) before it can be played by a co-attacker.
At the same time the other type of free pass where the co-attacker keeps one foot on the floor outside the circle and falls into the circle to tap the ball back to the taker has also been outlawed by making the requirement that the ball can only be played by the co-attacker when standing outside the circle with both feet on the floor. If this player jumps from outside the circle and lands again outside the circle then the third part of the rule (which has not changed) would have been satisfied as the ball would have passed outside the circle.
The proposal by the PRC should be seen as an interim one as the IKF Exco will be setting up a multi-national working group to examine and discuss not only the free pass but other aspects of the rules, e.g. substitutions, format of the match etc, and then come up with some proposals for experiments leading possibly to changes in the future.
On 20th February I already wrote a proposal for a change:

a. The free pass is taken from a spot on the top of the oval, 5 m. from the post (as seen from the center of the pitch). Right now, it is permitted to score directly from this free pass. This means no problems with distances, no problem with positions. No extra lines!

If there is an infringement/foul committed by a defensive player, the offensive team is awarded a free pass.

b. When a violation is made against an attacker, the same attacker must take the free pass. So every attacker should be ready to take the free pass, not only the specialists.

Later in March we had a meeting with some experts of KNKV and one member of PRC. There we had consensus about another proposal:

The assisting player of the taker of the free pass can get position on the left or right side from the post. There will be a special box for the assisting player next to the post on the circumference of 1.95 m. There is only 1 assisting player who can take this position next to the post! So the assisting player can make a choice between left or right of the post.
The defender of the assisting player can take position on the 'inside' of the player.

Proposed changes to the Playing Rules

§ 3.10 c, paragraph 9
The ball is brought into play when any one of the following three things occurs within four seconds of the referee blowing his whistle for the pass to be taken:
1. a player of the defending team touches the ball
2. the ball has been thrown clear through the air for a distance of at least 1 m (measured along the ground) and a player of the same team as the player taking the free pass touches the ball whilst standing with both feet in contact with the floor outside of the free pass circle
3. the ball has travelled completely outside of the free pass circle.

Comment:

The Free Pass after an infringement

The idea behind the original design of the Free Pass is to arrange a benefit / an advantage for the attack, especially the player who takes the Free Pass.
The advantage is an advantage of a free position, which takes shape in space and therefore in time.
A defender must take position at least 2.50 meters from the taker of the Free Pass, somewhere on the Free Pass circle.

This gives to the taker of the Free Pass space and time to pass the ball to an assist player. Mostly the assist player will have to pass back to the taker of the Free Pass. When they cooperate very fast the taker can hold his free position and makes profit of that position to go for a shot, from a good scoring position.
The restriction for the attacker is that there will first be played together with an assist player.
The assist player has to choose position at least 2.50 meters from the taker of the free ball, before the advantage can be redeemed by a good scoring chance.

The interim change limits the benefit/ advantage of the attacker too much.

With each movement (clearly visible) of the taker of the Free Pass, the defender at the circle on 2.50 meters distance, can enter the circle and start defending or hindering of the taker of the Free Pass.

If the ball has been thrown clear through the air for a distance of at least 1 meter before the assist player is allowed to touch the ball, then in most cases the ball has to travel more than 2 meters to come back to the player who took the Free Pass.
This time of cooperation that is needed, gives too much time to the defender.

The defender can bridge the advantage for the attacker.
So nothing will remain of the benefit.
The "interim" Free Pass is actually no more and no less, a Restart.

Video and Statistics
Modern defence is frustrating the intentions of attack.
In order to understand the attack, coaches consult the statistics.
Reading the statistics of former matches are a great help.
Watching video is also a great support for coaches.
In the Netherlands we use a system that has the name “gamebreaker”.
The statistics and the video are simultaneous connected.
The Dutch coaches of the Korfbal League clubs are supported by specialists One is doing the statistics on a lap top during the match. The other specialist is the video man.
The lap top is connected with the video camera.
All the actions of every player can be seen directly after the match without watching the total match. So the computer and the camera make possible that the coach can break the matches in pieces which he wants to read again.
I expect the KNKV will give support with this tool “Gamebreaker” to all the National Coaches which teams will participate at EC in autumn in the Netherlands.
So they can make use of this wonderful medium for analysing matches.
The coach can use statistics to read how the roles usually happens in one section. Moreover, the statistics can learn him how often the Tiger and Panther make their shots and how much they score. The effectiveness of the role of the Bear can be read easily from the statistics.

Quantitive and qualitive information
The statistics show mainly important quantitative information.
Next to the statistics the coach read the video. So he can get qualitative information.
The video can explain how an attack is organised (positions players and ball and rum lines);
how roles are developed; how the Tiger plays his 1-1 duel;
and from what position and by whom the Tiger gets his assists, etc.

A good defence will have to organize themselves so that the preferences of the attackers can be frustrated or intimidated.
A defence can focus how to interrupt the normal cooperation, interaction of the attack.
A defence can hinder, intimidate, frustrate
the roles of the attackers;
to reach the strategic spaces of the attackers;
and the tempo (slow down or speed up the passing) of the cooperation by the attackers.

Examples
It is very common that the four players of the defence tries to play as guards. They follow as shadows the attackers.
When coaches analyse matches they can propose other tactics.
Frustrating the Tiger is one of main goals in the defence.
The intention is that the Tiger cannot develop himself.
For this it is sometimes needed not to disrupt but to allow the Panther; the Wolf and the Bear to come in roles and spaces which they normally don’t play.
The defence can give a lot of space to a Wolf and challenge him/her to go in a free position, from where the Wolf can be challenged to make a shot.
The Bear is defended by a Center who is very strong in the duels around the korf. So it is not easy to win the rebound. So a Tiger cannot repeat his shooting in one attack.
The Tiger is strictly defended but the Wolf gets a lot of space, even for to make shots but the Wolf is hindered to come in the ideal position to assist the Tiger.

One of most difficult tactics of frustrating the attack is stealing the ball by the Guerrilla.
Mostly the Guerrilla is hindering the passing to the strategic assist position.
The Guerrilla is always anticipating the way the attackers intend to organise.
But the Guerrilla is also ready to steal the ball around the korf.
The Guerrilla is the extra player next to the Center, who is playing against a strong Bear.
Sometimes the Tiger get a double defence as well by the Guard and also by the Hunter.
By this tactic the Panther has to do the scoring. The Panther get the mental weight to finsh the attack.

Good coaches will find a lot of miscellaneous activities in defence play.
Good coaches understand that a well organised defence is an extremely important condition to win the match.

Cooperation in the attack

Line up in the attack section
In preparing a line up for a team the coach should decide which four players should cooperate in one section.
Every individual player has a preference for a role. Each player has his own qualities and plays with different strengths and weaknesses.
In a section where players should cooperate it happens very often that they confused each other literally. They do not give each other the space and time for develop a successful interaction.

For successful teamwork is necessary that a common goal is defined. This common goal is more than "you have to score". This goal has to define how players will cooperate successfully.
This common goal will correct the ways in which that goal can be achieved together.
That should be made clear. This process is based on agreements that clearly need to be trained.
The coach gives direction to that process in training and also during the match.

Roles
To achieve results in a match relies heavily on cooperation in various roles.
A Tiger can play himself in a free position in a 1-1 duel. After that he can collect himself and make the shot that has a great opportunity for a goal.
The Panther has the sense of timing to the attack of the Tiger to take that game. He is always ready and prepared to assist the role of the Tiger and has also options with a good chance of success.
A Beer can read the shots of his fellow attackers and is able to take position around the post and win about 70% of the rebounds.
A Wolf has the ability to understand the timing and scope of the Tiger and Panther so that both strikers will be assisted very precisely.

Rotation of Roles
A major role in surprise of the defence is the rotation of roles in the attack.
When players have the ability in the ensemble to rotate roles quickly then the defence is not easy to organise.
Then, at least three defenders has to stay continuously in the Guard role. This means that the defenders are bound in the 1 vs. 1 duel.
Actually, that is the basic idea of the introduction of roles like Tiger ; Panther; Wolf and Bears instead of using words as head attacker, rebounder and assister.
A Bear can become a Tiger in a split second. We call that "playing in a false role".
The best example of a false role is mostly done by the Wolf.
A Wolf is always ready to kill as the defender underestimated the Guard role. Especially form behind or sidewards of the post.

Space and time
To the rotation of rolls belong that the roles are not really tied to specific areas.
Tiger develops its power from any position.
Strong Tigers find their free positions around the korf and not just in front of the korf.
The timing of each free position has everything to do with knowing and reading of the actions of each other . Every player has his preferences, which are more or less recognizable. (Sometimes very pronounced sometimes a bit secret).
When the timing is always at the right time the cooperation will be more successful. The cooperation will enable more satisfaction.
For example: The Wolf will have time to get into the right position for assisting the Tiger, so that the Tiger can properly finish.
In the free position the Tiger is able to make profit of the time to arrange all conditions associated with a good shot.

Patterns
Patterns are needed to play together, to cooperate, to interact succefully.
Patterns give structure to players, so the roles can be done. (3-1, 2-2)
Patterns are also a way of cooperating that makes the structure clear to the defence.
Therefore patterns should not be appropriately applied to template. Moreover, rapid transitions of patterns and roles in the offensive game are needed to surprise the defence.

Davor Duronjic Belgium) and Ricky Wu (Chinese Taipei) played this year in the Korfbal League.

Both players made a fantastic perfomance the full season.

Davor will play with PKC also in the Play-off matches. Ricky will go home (Taiwan).

Next season both players will be back in the KL competition.

Ricky Wu had a fantastic indoor season with Nic. in the Korfbal League.

In the list of the KNKV statistics, he got the 5th place.

Hi Ben,

Here I am again with some feedback on the 2-2 street korfball. I noticed that the players were not focused enough on scoring, they were just passing the ball around, and made no real attacking movements.
That is why I made a new rule for them: they have to make 4 passes before scoring when they get the ball, but they are not allowed to make more than 7 passes before they make a shot. If after the 7th pass they make no shot (or a shot that doesn't touch the korf) they lose the ball.
In this way they were motivated to shoot from the smallest possible chances, and to agree with each other that the other goes immediately for the rebound when he/she sees that his/her teammate can shoot.
In this way we had a fast, action-packed game again.

Hi Bandor,
We play this game without the rule of defense; the players are only allowed to obstruct a shot. This rule can make the game tricky while it will help to increase the players ball handling skills. I think that the 4 passes before being allowed to score can be reduced to 2 passes. But this choice also depends on the skill of the players.

Tactic:

The attacking Players must play with the pole between them. The pole is in the center. This will make it less easy to intercept the ball when the players have also defend 1-1. The players will be forced to take risks and I think that taking risks belongs to this funny game. The game is an excellent tool to learn to balance between risk and control.

Analyzing this chain of actions:
The tiger, Tim Bakker has received the ball on his way to a running in shot. But he is not totally free.His defender is still hindering the shot. So Tiger, Tim Bakker decides not to finish the running in shot, he will pass the ball to the Bear, Erik de Vries, who leaves his rebound position nearby the post.
On the right photo, bear Erik de Vries is already finishing the shot behind the post. Erik is in a good balance and his shot is starting from above his head.
This tandem, tiger Bakker and bear de Vries, are very handy and have a lot of success in these situations. The threat of the tiger that he comes in a free position just before the post gives a good option for the bear to kill. The threat of the tiger asks also attention of the defender of the bear.
This attention gives the bear the option to come himself in a free position and is awarded very often by the tiger.
If the bear can make a score from this position he needs to leave the post backwards. When he receives the ball he should find his balance (stop the backwards movement) and finish his shot.
Words makes everything very simple but the chain of movements is difficult by the timing, tempo and accuracy.
