Basics
Korfball (English)
The
Korf:
o The korf in
korfball is a basket without a net that is used to score goals. The players
score a goal by shooting the ball through the korf. The korf is in the middle
of the attacking zones and the game is about agility and teamwork to get the
ball through this korf.
The
Ball:
o The ball in
korfball is an essential part of the game. It has different circumferences,
depending on the age and korfball shape. The ball is slightly lighter than a
traditional football, which makes it easier to pass accurately and score.
o The ball
symbolizes teamwork within the team, because the game is about passing
accurately and playing freely to ultimately score. Each team must pass the ball
efficiently to create scoring opportunities.
Co-ed
Team:
o A co-ed team in
korfball means that the team is mixed and contains both men and women. Korfball
is traditionally a mixed sport, in which equality between both genders is
central. In a standard korfball team, four or eight players, namely two and
four men and two and four women respectively, play together on the field. There
are attackers and defenders,
and the intention is for men to play against men and women against women. This
setup promotes cooperation and equality between genders in the sport.
360
Degrees
Scoring:
o 360 degrees scoring in
korfball means that a player can score from any position around the basket.
Because the korf is in the middle of the attacking zones, players can score the
ball from any angle or direction. This gives more freedom in the game and
requires players to be able to shoot from both close and far away, and from
different angles.
o The ability to
score from all sides is an important part of korfball, because it forces
defenders to remain constantly alert to prevent every possible scoring
position.
Cooperation (Interaction):
o Cooperation in
korfball refers to the importance of teamwork and playing together to be
successful. Korfball is a true team sport in which individual actions are
rarely enough to score or win. Players must work closely together. Scoring,
passing, running free and keeping possession of the ball are the korfball
actions that are intended within cooperation. Because there are specific rules,
such as not being allowed to walk with the ball, cooperation is essential to
create good chances.
o This means that
players must sense each other well, communicate and always keep an eye on their
teammates. Success in korfball often depends on how well the team works
together as a whole, rather than just individual skills.
All-round
Skills:
o All-round skills
in korfball refer to a player's ability to be versatile and to master different
aspects of the game well. Korfball requires a combination of both attacking and
defensive skills, as players are active in both roles. A player with all-round
skills can therefore pass, score and run well in attack, as well as prevent
scoring, prevent free passes and free runs and grab rebounds and
intercept the ball in defence.
o In korfball it is
important that players can perform well in all situations, because there is
often a switch between attack and defence. All-round skills make a player valuable
to the team, because he or she can contribute to
different game situations.
Regulated
Contact:
o Regulated contact
in korfball refers to the physical interaction between players allowed within
the rules of the game. Although korfball is known as a non-contact sport,
regulated contact means that certain forms of physical contact are allowed, if they remain
within the rules and the safety of the players is guaranteed.
o Here are some
examples of what is allowed and what is not:
·
Allowed
contact: Light contact, such as shoulder to shoulder or a small bump while
running, can be considered unavoidable and is usually allowed. A player may
also attempt to intercept or block the ball without pushing the opponent.
·
No
contact allowed: Physical actions such as pushing, pulling, holding or jumping
on an opponent are not allowed. A player may also not hinder the opponent in
his/her freedom of movement by forcing physical contact.
o The rules are
intended to keep the game fair and safe, while still allowing some natural
contact to occur during intense game situations.
