Question by BETHANY BENNETT (Scotland): The Shotclock?

Can you suggest some ways of playing with the shot clock - we were training it before the eurobowl but have never used it in competition?

The best way to coop with the shotclock is to train the match form: 4 against 4 in one section. So the "match like situation".
When players do this regularly they get "the feeling of 25 seconds in their body". During this training
the clock is on!

I think you have to prepare the attack with some lines about the organisation of the attack:

1. Who is the Tiger; the Bear; the Wolf and the Panther, during the building up of the attack. This means that there is a preference of roles in the organisation of the attack.
2. Coach a simple way of building up with not too many passes.
3. Use the the whole area of the attack section. So bring the ball to the back line.
4. Attackers try to center their positions to the post so that the defenders are positioned with their back to the post
5. Bulding up of the attack should be done in about 9 seconds. When the clock shows 16 seconds the attack should be ready for the first shot.
6. The Tiger should be ready for make this first shot; the Bear is ready for the rebound; The Wolf should be in an assist position and the Panther should be ready to take over the role of the Tiger.
7. When the first shot missed the korf around 16, the attack can build up the organisation again. The second shot should be done around 10! During this time there is an opportunity to rotate the roles. How to rotate roles is the plan of the coach.
8. When the clock is around 5, most defenders should change the process of their defence. They will give pressure to the attackers by a strict 1 : 1. The attackers should go for any shot which is possible in
these moments. It is really urgent to get a shot on the korf.

Mail from Hungary

Dear Ben,
First of all, again I wish You a happy new year.
Secondly, I checked the video at Your website and it looks cool (I mean the center shot clock). It is really 21st century look! Thank you!

How were the reactions from the local participants and the spectators?
Till up now: Positive. Now we hope that KNKV and IKF show interest so that we can make steps forwards.

And, I have some questions regarding Your bear-tiger system. What in Your opinion is the ranking of the 4 roles (based on the importance of the roles for scoring)? Which one is the most important?
When I make a line up I start with a Tiger. After that I am looking for a Bear and a Wolf. The last player for the section to select, is the Panther. But there should be harmony and synergy in the group. The players need eachother in their different roles. So you need the (role) supplements to settle a total for all the functions of the section.

and which one is the least important?

In other words, if You had to chose only 1 position of the 4 attacking roles, which one You think is the most imporant?
If You have average players, and You could chose only 1, which one would You chose?
My choice is the player who fits in the group. The mental aspect is hereby very important.
I am very curious about Your opinion.
Also, do You think there are special combinations in the roles?
Finally, can You name some of the best Tigers, Bears, Panthers and Wolfs internationally?
Tiger: Michiel Gerritsen; Tim Bakker; Jos Roseboom; Bart Cleijman; Gerald van Dijk; Suzanne Struik; Mitch Lenaerts; Nick Janssens; Andre Kuipers;
Panther: Suzanne Struik; Roxanna Detering; Gerald van Dijk; Kim Cocu; Mady Tims; Annick Dekeyser; Davor Duronjic
Wolf: Suzanne Struik; Kim Cocu; Mirjam Maltha; Jet Brandsma; Mady Tims; Patty Peeters; Veronique Biot;
Bear: Leon Simons; Rick Voorneveld; Andre Kuipers; Davor Duronic; Jeffrey Campers; Mirjam Maltha
That is it for now, and I am very curious about Your answer!
All the best from cold Hungary,
Bandor

Rol: DE WOLF

De Wolf in de opstelling 狼的功能及任務
De Wolf

* De Wolf is mentaal beheerst, gecontroleerd and rustig.

Functions and Roles

Like in many other sports, there are two functions in Korfball: Attack and Defense.
The attack position has its own subdivision; players can function as the assister, rebounder or attacker. As a defender the player can defend either the main attacker, the rebounder or the assisting player of the opposition. In (the highest levels of) Korfball, the final positions can circulate by the top players of the team. These players can do all of these functions and rotate between them. The way the player designs his function depends on his character and temper (and might be describe as different Action Types). This depends on the preferences of the player.
Here I would like to introduce the different "roles".

Attack
In the attack the player can choose to act as (depending on his preference) a Tiger, a Panther, a Bear or a Wolf. In the animal world, all these animals are know as killers. They are the winners in their own biotope. Of course these biotopes come with their own characteristics, conditions and preferences, which is a consequence of the players physiological, anatomical and mental qualities (like for instance length, speed, flexibility, concentration, confidence and team spirit). You can read the charachter and preferences of the player from his performance.

Defence
In the defense we can distinguish the roles of the Guard, the Hunter, the Center and Guerrilla. These names have a relation to the names of warriors and also illustrate the special physical and mental skills of these defense players.

The Hunter, a role between Guard and Guerrilla

The Tiger is defended by the Guard. The role of the Guard is simple and works the same for all defenders.
The Panther can be defended by the Hunter or the Guerrilla. The female Panther is mostly defended by a Guard. This is because the female defender cannot steal the ball in the rebound area, because she is often not tall enough.
Because the roles of Guerrilla and Hunter are extensions of the role of the Guard, these roles can only be played by specialists. The roles of Hunter and Guerrilla need a long quality training and can be very risky. The Hunter and the Guerrilla should learn to get a good insight in the balance of risk and control. She/He should judge the situation in a split second: to go for an interception or to stay in control.
When the Tiger and the Panther are male players, the defender of the Panther can sometimes play like the Hunter or Guerrilla. The Hunter chases and presses the Panther far from the post (The pressure of a Guard who gives pressure on the position of the Panther and the ball line to the Panther).
The Hunter can read the play of the attack, especially the role of the Panther, very well. The Hunter can change his defense: sometimes he plays as a guard and sometimes he gives support to the Guard of the Tiger by squeezing to the center lines. The Hunter is a good and fast runner and a good jumper. He has a special instinct (timing) when he can leave the Panther somewhere far from the post.
The Hunter forces the Panther to play in the outskirts of the attacker's division, nearby the lines of the division. He forces the Panther in a wide action radius from the post. By doing this, the Panther's role is reduced to a passing role.
Every time the panther is pressed in a positions wide from the post, the Hunter can squeeze more nearer to the post. In this position he can help the Guard of the Tiger and the Center who defends the Bear. Especially when the Tiger is busy to develop his attacker's role. When there is a distance shot the Hunter can come to steal the ball and help the Center.
So the Hunter as well as the Guerrilla (terrorist) can play very intimidatingly against the Attack.

The Panther

The composition of the LINE-UP demands players to take on different roles. It is not very effective to play the attack with only (or too many) Tigers. These Tigers will become rivals instead o companions. The Panther is playing in the shadow of the Tiger. We could call him a “shadow striker” or a “shadow attacker”.

The capabilities of the Panther are:
* The Panther is a killer. This players shots are very successful. The number of attempts during a match are between 10 – 18. The scoring percentage is between 20 - 30%. So The Panther makes normally less shots than the Tiger during a match but his / her output is high and important for the total score.

* The Panther is not as good as a Tiger when fighting a duel with a Guard. The Panther makes profit of the pressure of the Tiger. When the Tiger is fighting in a duel, the Tiger asks attention of the defence. In these special moments the Panther can get a free position. The Panther operates at a tempo just behind or besides the Tiger. Normally he /she starts also 6-8 meters from the post.

* The Panther is always moving. This player tries to move in an area so that his Guard cannot see the ball or give to his opponent just a glimse of the position of the ball. The Panther can wait and can choose his/her moment for to kill. He / she has the patient to select the moments to go for a free position and go for a shot. The Panther is mentally always ready but he /she is prepared but he / she can wait. The Panther is aware that he / she does not get so many possibilities to strike. But when their is a chance the Panther is totally ready, in (mental and physical) balance.

* The Panther is also a very good passer. He/she can help the Wolf to transport the ball during the building up of the attack. With the long pass he/she can change the directions of the attack and also assist the Tiger, Wolf and Bear.

* During rotation of roles in the attack the Panther can chance his/her role with the Tiger and can also take the role of the Wolf. Rotation in the attack is necessary. Tactically rotation is very surprising for the defence, the danger is coming from unexpected sides. In attacks where players don’t rotate the roles, the structure of the attack is easily to understand for the defence.

The Tiger

Before every match the coach has to compose a line up.
The core role in the line up of the attack is the role of the TIGER.
The capabilities of a TIGER are:

* The Tiger is a killer. In every match he/she scores. The top Tigers in the Dutch competition score about 4 - 6 goals in every match. (when free passes and penalties are included they score 7 – 8 goals in a match) Their average scoring percentage is 20 - 30 % (without the free pass and penalties). The Tiger does about 20 -30 shot attempts in a match. The goals by the Tigers made by free pass and penalties are 30% of his/her total scores.

* Mostly the Tigers are male players. In the Dutch competition there is also one excellent female Tiger who scores between 20% - 30 %. In 14 matches she scored 74 goals (also 20 goals by penalties and free passes included). It is a pity that there are so few female Tigers who can make structural decisive difference in matches.

* The distance shot of the Tiger is excellent. She/He scores are over 30% from a totally free position. Under high pressure of a good Guard the scoring can go down. But the excellent quality of the distance shot gives way for other scoring options like running in and all kinds of V-shots. The Tiger can play and vary between the distance shot, running-in and V-shots.

* The shot of the Tiger will be released high. This makes it difficult for the Guard to block the shot. In the Dutch competition top Tigers are mostly tall players ( 1.90 – 2.00 meters).

* The Tiger can 'finish' at every time or moment during the match. A Tiger can handle the pressure of having the obligation to score. This means that he/she can open the match and score at crucial moments when there is a maximum of pressure. Then the real Tiger can take the responsibility and go for the chance created by scoring. The Tiger has a good balance between what is demanded (by coach, other players or the public) and his/her confidence in what he/she will perform. The top Tiger can perform under high pressure. This player naturally has a positive perception of his/her capabilities.

* A Tiger is totally focused to on scoring. During a match he/she makes use of more than 20 scoring attempts.

* A Tiger can duel with every Guard and can make very effectively profit of the weak sides of the Guard. Duels between Tiger and Guard should produce free positions which can be used for scoring attempts. Such a fight between Tiger and Guard is characterized by high tempo and a lot of changes of tempi and directions. The Tiger is fast and always ready to change directions in a high tempo. When the Tiger comes into free position, he/she is able to collect himself/ herself and to come in the right balance for a successful shot.

* A Tiger likes the Wolf as assist. The Wolf is the best supporter for the Tiger, because this player knows the position, the moment and the direction the Tiger needs assistance in. The Tiger is fed by the Wolf. The Wolf should understand the actions of the Tiger. The Wolf can value these actions and give the effective and efficient cooperation and communication. Mostly the Tiger is not focussed on chances of the Panther, Wolf and Bear. The Tiger will not naturally play a double pass so that the Panther can finish the attack.

* The top Tiger, in free position about 3-6 meters from the post will not hesitate to go for the chance, even when there is no Bear for rebounding the shot. The Tiger sends out confidence in his/her capabilities.

The Guard and The Hunter

Defence: 1-1 the role of the guard and the Hunter
Defence is very often a topic that we don’t give enough attention. Coaches and players
think very often that defence is an issue you pass through on the way to a score.
Defence is in top korfball the other side of the balance.

A good defence gives the attackers really time for to score. For the defence the
order of importance should be borne in mind. The defender (Guard) of the Tiger
and (Hunter) of the Panther (main attackers) is of more (of another) importance than that of the defender of either the assist (can be Guerrilla) or rebound (Centre)

The instructions to all defenders are:
• prevent attempt of shots• block attempts to score
• hinder attempts to score thereby influencing the accuracy
• with a chance of a distance shot by the attacker don't change to allow a running-in
opportunity
• provide assistance to fellow defenders with front defence
• impede the organization of the attack
• intercept the ball

The Bubble the basic idea of 1-1:

The defender should know be aware of the following points:
1. The defender has to avoid that his opponent makes shots. He can do this to play a
strict 1-1. This should happen in an area which is called the bubble. See the design.
The straight arm of the defender should reach the ball in the hands of attacker
which are in shooting position.

2. The defender should not stand erect A good rule for a lower crouch is: Make sure the
head of the Guard/Hunter is always lower than the head of the Tiger/Panther the defender
is guarding. By standing lower the Guard/Hunter is more ready to move. The weight of the
body of the Guard/Hunter should be to the back foot. Get in the Tiger's/Panther's bubble and
have your weight back. Guard/Hunter often stay too far away from their tiger and Panther.
When the Guard/Hunter is not in the bubble and the Tiger/Panther receives the ball or he
fakes without getting the ball and then the defender starts to move forward, the Guard/Hunter is too late to get to the bubble. His weight is forward so that the Guard/Hunter can not possibly beat the Tiger/Panther where he is going. The Guard/Hunter should be always in the bubble when the Tiger/Panther receives the ball in his hands. The Guard/Hunter needs a lot of communication especially by the Center defender.

3. Get in the bubble of the Tiger/Panther. This means the Guard/Hunter plays in a good defensive position.
Position means so close that the Guard/Hunter could slap the ball if the Tiger/Panther should hold the ball in shot position. To play good defence the Guard/Hunter must consistently be in that bubble. Even along there is front defence the Guard/Hunter should be able to get in the Tiger's/Panther's bubble. Every time the Tiger/Panther gets the ball, the Guard/Hunter strives to be in the bubble. The Guard/Hunter will be a constant irritation.

4. Position of the hands. When the Guard/Hunter expects the Tiger/Panther will get the ball, or the Tiger/Panther has the ball, in the shooting range, the Guard/Hunter should use his hands. “Hands up” at that special moments. If the Tiger/Panther with the ball is in shooting range, the Guard/Hunter should have one hand up almost touching the ball. The Guard/Hunter is prepared to block the shot. In this moment the Guard/Hunter is allowed to raise his body for an active block. When the Guard/Hunter defends a running Tiger/Panther. The hands of the Guard /Hunter do not have to be up.
