The 12th Sub Junior National Korfball Championship kicked off with a grand opening ceremony that was graced by Mr. Madan Mitra, Honble Minister for Sports at Kolkata. The hosts organized cultural programs and also the Indian traditional Bharatanatyam dance. The highlight of the opening ceremony was welcoming the participants with “Tilak” - Tilak is a mark of auspiciousness. It is put on the forehead with sandal paste, sacred ashes or kumkum (red tumeric)

Addressing the gathering of player, officials and school children from across the country, the honble minister emphasized the need for right training at young age for proper development of the sport.

13 teams from across the country are participating in this 4 day long tournament (4th to 7th November, 2012) which will see competition in U-16 category. Sincere thanks to Mr. K.D. Singh (President, KFI) and Alchemist Group for sponsoring the tournament.

Impressed by seeing the sport, Mr. Madan Mitra urged the West Bengal Korfball Association to apply for recognition and affiliation to the Sports Council of West Bengal. He will take necessary steps to recognize and develop korfball in the state on behalf of government. He also announced cash prize for the top 3 teams on behalf of the Government of West Bengal.

The ground being centrally located in city is attracting lots of local public to view the matches.
